About this deal

Highly entertaining dino-spin on the "Ugly Duckling" tale, this story features the placid, water-dwelling, vegetarian duckbill dinosaurs and the mean, meat-eating, sinister T-Rex dinosaurs (cliched, yes, but oh well) who wish they could cross the river to eat the duckbills. We have all enjoyed listening to this story and getting to know the different characters, good and bad!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story on my placement as within this book Juila Donaldson uses repetitive phrases such as “Up with hunting! When he finds his true family, he learns why he is the way he is, and ends up standing up to his other family when they come to attack! The book was mostly boring, T-rexes are angry, carnivorous dinosaurs and nothing will change them from that.Julia Donaldson and David Roberts have created such a wonderful story following two different dinosaur species. Since then he has illustrated works by authors such as Philip Ardagh, Daren King, Julia Donaldson, Jacqueline Wilson, Tom Baker and Chris Priestley.

Would be fun to work on in a playful way with children, as well as a good discussion for themes of family, friends, fitting in and getting along. But as they walk around the museum, all Dave wants to know is wherther these dinosaurs are really dead. I can't say what, as that would spoil the book, and for such a short review I don't feel like spoiler-tagging stuff. We want a song about throwing crumpled-up wrapping paper into the bin” was a typical request from the BBC.

One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. He was feeling scared and anxious but we promised that if he came into our classroom we would be kind and quiet so we wouldn't scare him!

We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. We turned the narrative poem (The Spider and the Fly) into a playscript, by setting it out correctly and adding detailed stage directions. Shades of The Ugly Duckling, this is a solid children's book but not up to the best Julia Donaldson has to offer. The text is scattered with a few bigger and more complex word, especially the names of some dinosaurs which will challenge younger readers abilities, but with potential help from an adult should be easy to understand. In the end, the poor little "Tyrannosaurus Drip" gets a chance to prove himself to his true family and become a hero.Tyrannosaurus Drip, Julia Donaldson and David Roberts’s brilliantly funny story about celebrating difference, is much-loved by little dinosaur fans everywhere. At one point I was even cheering for the T-rexes, because at least they showed emotion and had a goal.
