Though Vandal has been known to lie about his past aliases, and several stories portray Jack differently.

At the conclusion of this last battle, Vandal was left drifting through space on the meteor, determined to learn the purpose of his life. Aristocrats Are Evil: His character design is clearly meant to evoke this, as whenever he's not the Badass in a Nice Suit he's wearing some stylish-yet-menacing outfit meant to evoke this (indeed, for most of his history he's been this exclusively, with the suits only really becoming a thing post- Crisis). They're both dizzyingly intelligent and resourceful Diabolical Masterminds with aims of ruling the world. This was shown to be due more to ulterior motives than fatherly love, as in issue three of the Secret Six miniseries it was revealed Savage wants his daughter to produce an heir with Catman, and he's been putting bounties on the Secret Six's heads as a warning of what will happen to her lover, Knockout, if she refuses him.Savage (still possessing the Mark of Cain) forms a temporary alliance with fellow immortal Ra's al Ghul to thwart the group's plan. The Plan: A master of this in all its forms, having had over five hundred centuries to perfect the art. Freeze | Cheetah | Hush | Mad Hatter | Two-Face | Bane | Chemo | Killer Croc | Clayface | Joker | Dr. Instead of a savage brute who turns to world domination more or less as a hobby, he is a Knight Templar who wants world domination for a higher purpose (implied to be establishing Earth as a universal superpower and protecting it from alien incursions).

He was the inspiration for the biblical figure Cain, having committed the first recorded murder, making him an important figure in the Religion of Crime. The radiation enhanced his mental and physical abilities beyond that of a normal human as well as granting him regenerative abilities and perpetual longevity. Vandal has fathered thousands of children, but the only one he truly considers his heir is his daughter Scandal Savage; and he is also the ancestor of superhero Roy Harper, Green Arrow's first sidekick. Being as old as he is, he's actually done it before in the past, only for the world to outgrow him and for him to have to start all over again.He is the archenemy of Immortal Man, Resurrection Man, Alan Scott, Wally West, and his daughter Scandal Savage.

Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Sweet might be the wrong word for it, but Savage was definitely more social and jovial during the Demon Knights series, which took place during the Dark Ages and featured Savage as a member of the team of titular antiheroes.Authority Equals Asskicking: He learned a very long time ago that the two go hand-in-hand in the DC Universe, and it helps that he's been doing both since literally before the dawn of history.

Older Than They Look: He looks like a man in middle age when he's really about fifty-thousand years old.Cold-Blooded Torture: He's not afraid to indulge in this, sometimes for information but just as often for fun. When Neron isn't interested, Vandal tempts him with a "purer soul" in the first Atomic Skull (the one who thought he was a superhero) and asks for Ray to be spared as a "finder's fee.
