Matt's mother, Randy, is a professional boxer. His father, Donald, is a doctor. They separate when Matt is young, and Matt lives with his father due to Randy's irregular work schedule. Donald falls into an increasingly wild party scene in Randy's absence, and encourages a young Matt to join in on the drinking and drug use. Matt develops an addiction to cocaine and heroin, which Randy finds out about and helps him rehabilitate from. In this time they grow quite close, and she gets him into boxing and Exy as alternate outlets. When Matt begins struggling to stay clean at Palmetto, Randy accepts Andrew's help to "cure" Matt of his addiction and once again takes time off from work to help her son recover (see The Foxes).
