About this deal

It is best not to use human nail designed products on dogs because they are the wrong shape to work with dogs’ nails.

Grinding allows you to follow the natural shape of your dog’s nails, resulting in a more natural, comfortable trimmed nail. When used incorrectly, nail clippers leave sharp edges at odd angles to the natural nail shape. This is uncomfortable for the dog. Dremel vs. Clipper for Dog Nails

There are a number of advantages and disadvantages of using a nail grinderas opposed to a nail cutter. We’ll cover some of the big ones here! The American Kennel Club recommends starting at the bottom of the nail and carefully moving across the tip, smoothing the edges as you go. Some grinders even include special tips just for polishing the nail at the end. You always want to hold the paw securely and keep your dog comfortable. If they show any signs of discomfort or pain, stop immediately. First, show your dog the grinder and give a reward (like some stinky, yummy treats). Place rewards near the grinder (when it’s off) to get the dog sniffing and close to the grinder. Even for pups with light-colored nails, grinding can be more comfortable. While clippers can pinch and tug, grinders don’t exert any pressure or twist.

Our testing team rated the Dremel PawControl highly for dog owners who trim their pups' nails at least once a month. With several sanding discs, multiple bands, and almost three hours of battery life, it is especially useful for multi-dog homes. The following devices didn’t make our top three, but you may still want to consider them. We have some budget options, a higher-end option, and ones with LED lights to help illuminate your dog’s nails while you work on them. FURminator Nail Grinder Review Begin by applying the band or disc to your dog's nail for no more than three seconds. Do not press—the grinder doesn't need additional pressure. Because the rotary tool can heat up your dog's nails, it's better to move from nail to nail: applying the grinder for three seconds and moving on to allow time for each nail to cool down. If a nail still needs further trimming, return to it in a second or third pass. How often you trim your pup’s nails depends on how active they are and the terrain that they play on. Generally, about once a week would suffice for regular nail trimming. If your dog plays on a rough surface all day, you might even get away with as little as once a month, although that’s the extreme case. The Dremel 7300-PT is a cordless grinder, which I found to be essential. As soon as we called Logan over to try it out, he knew something was up, and he got a bit dodgy about it—not being tethered to a particular spot or having to deal with a cord was a huge benefit. It’s also small and light enough to be comfortable in the hand, allowing for good control. The tool is cordless, so you don’t need to worry about your dog getting caught up in the chord while you are working, and it has a removable and rechargeable battery that will save you money in the long run.
