About this deal

Contemptor-Galatus Dreadnoughts are still in service in the 41st millennium (No idea why they aren't allowed in 40k 8e tabletop then...). They're called "Revered Fallen" by their fellow Custodes.

In The Emperor's Legion, we have three primary viewpoints. The first of these is Imperial Chancellor Alexei Tieron who looks after the interests of the High Lords of Terra, the twelve nominated peers of the Imperium who rule it in the Emperor's name. He is no High Lord himself, but he has equal political power and can affect great changes should he put himself to the task. Which is what much of the novel is about for one of the great debates before the High Lords when the novel begins is to (potentially) redefine the role of the Adeptus Custodes within the Imperium. Said to be ten thousand strong, they are a potent legendary force and with the affairs of the Imperium as dire as they are, redeploying some of their number to active warzones would be a great advantage. And so the law itself must be changed, and Alexei intends for that to happen. Sole Survivor: Aleya begins the story as the only survivor of her sisterhood. Once she arrives on Terra, she finds that many other Sisters are also last of their own groups.Refused by the Call: When the leader of the Companions (the Custodians who watch over the Emperor directly) has prophetic dreams featuring Valerian's name, they both assume that this is The Call for Valerian to join the Companions - only for him to be unable to cross the treshold into the throne room. It's implied that the Emperor deliberately pushed him away so that Valerian would go to Vorlese. The Speechless: As a Sister of Silence, Aleya has taken a vow to never speak a word. When she has to communicate with others, she does so in Hand Signals, though there are only a few people who can understand it. She lets out a battle cry at the very end of The Emperor's Legion, as she believes she's about to die. Devoting an ever increasing number of complex terminology to their oral testimony of their perilous vehement deeds whenever they enter that foe's arena as if they were adhering to a secret cult with an highly unreserved belief that casual language is an inexcusable heresy only admissible to the detestable foe’s that they are about to purge while describing the entire incident with as many adjectives as it’s humanly possible. While this exhausting practice is not entirely without it’s own literal benefits, a spectator such as I, would consider it to be somewhat refreshing if…

I mean (Actual quote from the book): “I drove myself hard, aiming to recover my full spectrum of physical movement and banish my last evidence of my injury but even so there were still moments of unavoidable reflection.” You don’t say… “Unavoidable” Odd Friendship: Valerian considers his and Aleya's frienship to be this. He's an immortal Custodian thousands of years old, Brainwashed to have no strong emotions except absolute loyalty to the Emperor; she's a firebrand Sister of Silence whose nature as a blank means she has trouble with any interpersonal interactions. They make it work anyway. Unsurprisingly, the Custodes are well aware of the existense of the Grey Knights. Also, both the Grey Knights and the Deathwatch are something of an open secret within the High Lords. Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Valerian makes something of a habit of it, atypically for a Custodian. It's tolerated mostly because things come up his way most of the time. The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor's praetorian guard, the defenders of Terra and watchers over the Golden Throne. But when a threat arises, they and their Sisters of Silence allies may find themselves pressed almost beyond endurance…Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Several people note that in his determination to release the Custodes, Tieron is acting extremely unlike his usual self. Some suggest that he simply found a cause worth fighting for, while others wonder if the Emperor isn't acting through him. Tieron himself is unsure.
