About this deal

As for Rose’s character, she is quite different to the other girls—she is very shy, she struggles with speech and learning (often being selectively mute), and has a special interest in horses. Her differences wouldn’t be well understood in those days, but I wanted to show that she could be an important part of the group, too.

SC: Mostly my terrible jokes… I often have silly jokes that my editors don’t get and tell me to take out. (Sometimes I don’t listen!) But at least I keep myself amused when writing.

There's a new girl at Rookwood School, and she's as enchanting as she is mysterious. But is Ebony really who she seems? So, the story itself was intriguing. Then you couple it with Ivy. She’s one of those characters you can’t help but love, torn between her own shy self and needing to act the part of her brash sister made for some interesting character moments. I think my absolute favourite was a snap, very bad, decision Ivy makes that she can barely tell whether it is her own or her acting going too far. The girls around her make up a good cast as well, even the girls giving her a hard time are never truly bad, everything is shown evenly and the friend Ivy finds is just so cute I want to bundle her away.

GM: Were there any other characters you especially enjoyed writing? If so, what was it about them that inspired you? A creepy boarding school at midnight. A secret diary. A terrifying teacher. A spine-tingling mystery must be solved. It’s summer and as a special treat after the horrors of last term Mrs Knight announces a school trip to Shady Pines Hotel on the shores of Lake Seren. Scarlet and Ivy are thrilled to get away from Rookwood for a break! With evil headmaster, Mr Bartholomew, safely out of the picture, life is looking up for Scarlet and Ivy.

Interview With the Author

Three more spine-tingling mysteries for Scarlet and Ivy to solve in the creepily atmospheric Rookwood School… This has a VERY satisfying ending, but with an ‘opening’ that makes you want to read on by CHOICE! (a different kind of thing altogether)

BRAVO! Truly, a around of applause is owed to Sophie Cleverly and The Lost Twin. I'm well out of the age range that this book is aimed at, but I absolutely adored every bit of it! I can only imagine how much excitement younger Jessica would have had, upon discovering this story. So many things I love are expertly wrapped up in here. Forbidding boarding schools, terrible headmistresses, brave girls, and tons of secrets. What more could a reader ask for? Set in the 1930s at Rookwood School - a creepy boarding school with plenty of dark secrets - the books follow twin sisters, troublesome Scarlet and quiet Ivy, as they investigate the disturbing mysteries that lurk behind closed doors. Both mysteries build in tension and wonder, revealing kidnapping, treachery, new family and memories. Rookwood’s reputation is crumbling around them, as girls leave in droves. Will the Ballet recital mend it? Or will it be the death of the twins? When the girls get the chance to audition for a theatre show of ballet Sleeping Beauty, the girls are excited but Scarlet more so as she wants the main role of Aurora so starts getting secret lessons after class with Miss Finch to improve. So when her teacher disappears mysteriously, a new teacher, Madame Zelda, shows up randomly and something seems off, just where is Miss Finch?

Reviews

Scarlet and Ivy is a middle-grade series of six books, the latest one (and last in the series) was released in January 2019. The books follow the adventures of Scarlet and Ivy Grey, thirteen-year-old twins who attend Rookwood School, an English boarding school in the 1930s. Throughout the books, we get to know the girls and their family, along with their friends, and the teachers at the school as they solve a series of mysteries. Other than book one, The Lost Twin, the books are told in chapters that alternate between the perspectives of the two girls. I really love Mrs. Sophie Cleverly’s writing style!! Her writing is beautiful❤️ One of the best things about her books is that the endings are not loose ❤️ Ivy, while pretending to be Scarlet, navigates her way through classes, Miss Fox’s beady stare, a new personality and daily life at the school, whilst she follows the clues Scarlet has left behind for her. This is not the only excitement for the twins and best friend Ariade. They are following clues about their mother. What was her real name? Why did she use someone else’s? Why did they never learn she’d been a pupil at Rookwood too?
