About this deal

Acute and chronic hepatobiliary diseases are quite commonly reported in both dogs and cats [ 1– 3]. These conditions recognize many different causes, as well as numerous therapeutic options also depending on several aspects such as underlying cause, chronicity, species involved, and others. Therefore, treatments reported variably include anti-inflammatory molecules (e.g., prednisolone, ursodeoxycholic acid, and S-adenosylmethionine), immunosuppressants (e.g. azathioprine), antifibrotics (e.g. colchicine and D-penicillamine), antioxidants (e.g. ursodeoxycholic acid, S-adenosylmethionine, vitamin E, N-acetylcysteine, and silymarin), dietary management, and management of any possible complications [ 2– 4].

Improves kidney function as well as aiding the damage that can occur in the body due to the use of drugs, radiation therapy, diabetes, and infections. Our research has limitations as it looked only for some molecules, the most frequently included in veterinary complementary feed to support the liver function in dogs and cats, and it consequently failed to meet, for example, some other stimulating research articles always regarding this topic, although in healthy animals (one was an abstract) [ 49, 50] or in form of review [ 51]. In one case, SAMe was administered to healthy cats resulting, among other encouraging effects, in a positive influence on hepatic redox balance [ 50]. Milk thistle is a flower in the Aster family used medicinally for over 2,000 years. Practitioners use milk thistle to support liver detoxification functions and various organs such as the stomach, gastrointestinal tract and kidneys. It is also used for liver disease, congestion of the liver, spleen or gallbladder, varicose veins, uterine hemorrhage, allergies, and as an adjunctive cancer therapy.Free radicals are unstable atoms that roam the body, causing damage to cells. Antioxidants acting as free radical scavengers have the ability to bind these atoms and deactivate them. Many compounds in nature can act as antioxidants.

The scientific name for milk thistle is Silybum Marianum. It’s also referred to as wild artichoke and holy thistle. Using Milk Thistle for Dogs Milk Thistle for cats with liver disease is glycerin-based and safe for long-term use. This potent herbal formula provides excellent proactive support and can be taken in conjunction with conventional treatment. S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe or AdoMet or SAM) is the active form of methionine. During its metabolism, mainly in the liver, methionine is converted to SAMe by the enzyme methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT), using ATP as cosubstrate [ 33]. In particular, SAMe is a fundamental methyl donor in transmethylation reactions of phospholipids, mainly phosphatidylcholine, which is essential to maintain the structure and function of cell membranes [ 34]. Moreover, at hepatic level, SAMe restores glutathione reserve and reduces the liver damage [ 35, 36]. As described in the review of Guo et al. [ 37], the meta-analysis of studies in humans (based on published randomized controlled trials), pointed out that in the treatment of liver diseases, SAMe enhances hepatic function parameters (total bilirubin and aspartate transaminase and not alanine aminotransferase). It is a safe dietary supplement and could improve the liver function, but in human medicine, the use of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and neo-minophagen C (SNMC) was more effective than SAMe in certain chronic hepatic conditions [ 37].

Supplements given to cats should not be extracted from alcohol as an alcohol-based tincture is unacceptable in taste, and buying products specifically for cats or pets in general is preferable. Dogs Mellit – has herbs that may help to reduce the blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism, and balance the organs against the pancreatitis symptoms. If you use the liquid tincture, you can easily dose it using the dropper it comes with. The dropped is usually marked so you know exactly how much of the substance you administer to your cat. The dosage should be calculated according to the body weight: 1 drop per 2 pounds. It is recommended that you divide the dose for 2 or more administrations a day. Milk Thistle for Dogs. It has also been shown to reduce kidney toxicity from chemotherapeutic drugs.
