About this deal

Many dash cams now come in single- or dual-camera versions, with the dual cam version fitting in a second camera into the main unit, or including a smaller camera that you can fit to the rear windscreen. Some even include three cameras, with one recording the view through the windscreen, another the view through the rear windscreen, and a final camera recording what’s going on inside the car – often with infrared lighting for visibility after dark. Some dash cams have internal power, or can easily be charged using external power sources. However, the rest use the cigarette lighter/USB port in your vehicle or need to be hard-wired, meaning they do use your car's battery. If you decide to have these on (they can be turned off through the app) the dash cam will emit a beep if you start to drift over road markings or go over the speed limit. Evidence that you were at fault – Incriminating footage is a two-way street. If there’s a dispute about who’s at fault for an accident, evidence from your dash cam could put the blame at your door. Must be placed carefully to avoid breaking the law – Installing a dashcam on your dashboard might seem like the most logical thing to do. However, it can interfere with the view and make for unsafe driving. Just under the rear-view mirror is one area that can give the dash cam an unobstructed view of the road without infringing on your viewing area.

You don’t get the driver assistance systems of other dash cams, so it’s up to you or your vehicle to spot speed cameras and potential collisions. That said, you still get Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, and we like that Vantrue has focused on video quality over unnecessary extras. You don’t drive for a living: Most road users don’t need interior recording, so unless you’re ferrying passengers for pay, you might find better value elsewhere. GoPro cameras are some of the best action cameras you can buy. They can be easily mounted to your dashboard and set to record video on a rolling loop. Because GoPro cameras are compact, they shouldn’t obstruct your view of the road ahead, while the latest models are capable of capturing videos at resolutions sharper than 4K.They're certainly a worthwhile investment (especially in the winter) and could end up saving you a lot of money, either in the event of an accident or in insurance premiums (for example, some companies will give you a 15-per cent discount car insurance with most of these cameras). As for the footage, 1080p at 30fps might not seem amazing now that 4K dash cams are becoming more affordable, but the Dash Cam 47 gives you crisp, bright images whether you’re driving at night or in bright sunlight, with more shadow detail than some other dash cams and good handling of glare from the sun or headlights. Like the Dash Cam 46 before it, it’s a great all-rounder. Helpfully, both the display angle and camera lens are adjustable, so you can find the right position between road and driver. Full HD footage is shot in HDR at 30fps, delivering balanced exposure and enough detail to make number plates legible. That said, we found that video suffers from noticeable stabilization wobble. This distortion doesn’t reduce the detail, but footage is worse than from other Garmin dash cams. You want built-in rear recording: There are rivals for a similar price with rear-view cameras as standard, but it's an optional add-on for the 622GW. Parking protection to record what’s going on around your car can be a bonus, provided you don’t use it in an area where the sight of your dash cam is more likely to get your car broken in to and the dash cam stolen.

Using genuine Mercedes parts, the entire installation is completed to the highest standard and when finished will be identical to the factory specification. Keeps your cigarette lighter free. Power your sat nav or charge your phone without having to unplug your dash cam.

You want at least 1080p recording, 720p doesn't quite cut the mustard, and while 4K is a nice option to have, the file sizes are very large and older computers will struggle to play them. A dash cam is an additional eye on the road that records important incidents, such as collisions or unexpected bumps to your vehicle, which can then be shared with the police or insurers to prove exactly what happened. Pointing out of your windscreen (and rear window if you also have a rear-facing dash cam), dash cams get their power from the12V power outlet in your car. Video resolution is a key consideration when choosing a dash cam, as explained below. Most dash cams in 2023 can record footage in Full HD, which is generally enough to identify large details in a video clip. Sharper 4K dash cams tend to cost more, but capture video at a higher resolution. This makes it easier to pull out crucial details such as number plates, which mean 4K dash cams generally offer more reassurance from a safety perspective. Since the introduction of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) entertainment systems for the many different 2020 Mercedes-Benz models, a lot of owners found the very puzzling “Dashcam” control inside their car, while the actual dashcam (Video Recording Option) was nowhere to be found! And the obvious question arose: “Where is the dashcam of my Mercedes and how do I use it?” Mercedes Dashcam! Like its 522GW sibling, this model can be controlled via the voice with Alexa Skills, but it requires the accompanying smartphone app to work, which isn’t the best. Despite the new dual 2.4GHz + 5GHz Wi-Fi, it still has trouble connecting with phones to transfer images and video clips. You don’t need a complex camera: If you only want to capture video of the road, there are simpler dash cam options for a lot less money.Relatively compact for a dual-lens dash cam, the Vantrue N2 Pro records a detailed view of the road ahead and your vehicle’s interior. Designed with taxi drivers in mind, it forgoes many of the extras which your car is already likely to have, including speed camera alerts and collision warnings. In our tests, the front camera’s footage was generally good enough in most scenarios. Viofo utilizes Sony Starvis image sensors, which perform well in low-light conditions. The lower resolution does compromise quality in subpar driving situations though, with fuzzy detail putting it behind the best 4K competitors. The interior and rear cameras offer a wide 170-degree field of view, and the interior camera is equipped with six LEDs for infrared capabilities. Even in the darkest driving conditions, visibility inside the car remained clear in our tests. There are several things to consider when buying a dash cam, but the most important factor is image quality. These devices are absolutely pointless if, when it comes to reviewing the footage of an accident, it looks like the lens has been smeared with Vaseline, and you have difficulty telling whether you were cut up by a grey Vauxhall Corsa or a baby elephant.
