About this deal

The foliage forms a conical shape at the top of the tree. Each branch has twigs with short green to dark-green needles that grow in 2 rows. These give off a mild turpentine-like fragrance when crushed.

The bark is gray-brown to gray-green and is smooth with resin blisters, developing few, if any, deep grooves as it ages. The dark green upper surface of the leaves is sometimes glaucous with stomatal bands. If present, stomata are concentrated near the blunt or slightly notched leaf tip. The lower surface has two stomatal bands. Towards the shorter length, we have the Fraser Fir that grows to 30 -50 ft maximum and SubalPine and Balsam Fir, reaching about 65 -66 feet maximum. What about the difference between a fir and spruce tree? Again, needle types are the key to identification. Spruce needles have four sides and they roll easily between your fingers. Fir needles are flat and if they don’t roll easily, chances are it is a fir tree, not a pine or spruce. Identifying Spruce, Pine or Fir Based on their Needles The easiest way to tell the difference between spruce trees and pine trees apart is by their needles and cones.

Prune deciduous magnolias and walnut trees between mid-summer and early autumn, to avoid excessive bleeding and allow pruning cuts to heal well Read more about growing and caring for yew trees here. Cypress, Arborvitae, and Juniper Bald cypress When I was growing up in Northeastern Pennsylvania, a line of spruce trees designated an intentionally planted buffer against windblown snowdrifts. Windscreen of spruce. Pruning when dormant: Usually involves shortening side-branches all over the tree to make it smaller and more attractive. It lets in light and reduces the tree's vulnerability to wind damage and is an opportunity to remove diseased or damaged wood. To get a balanced result, work slowly and carefully and evaluate the effect of removing each branch. This is not suitable for trees prone to silver leaf. More easily identified because yew tends to form small shrubs, yews could be mistaken as fir tree because of their flat needles. Photo by Matt Suwak.Identifying Features: Red Fir has 4(3)-sided leaves that are never flat, and their bases curve S-shaped to grow upwards in curvy rows rather than horizontally. The resin blisters on their bark are red-orange instead of grayish or whitish. It can be differentiated from the closely related Noble Fir by not having grooves in the upper surface of its leaf and by its ascending and descending rather than horizontal branches.
