About this deal

Returning home to Wood's Hole, Massachusetts, Joanne continued to study clouds, discovering more and more surprising things about them. Unafraid, she would fly under, over and through all kinds of clouds, including the scary cumulonimbi clouds filling with gusting winds and rain, eventually coming to understand the power of these massive clouds.

Overall I think this is a great biography of a woman worth knowing about, and interestingly covers the science of meteorology in an age-appropriate way.

Po Yun 2: Tun Hai; Poyun 2: Tunhai; Swallowing Sea; 破云2:吞海; Breaking Through the Clouds 2: Devouring the Sea

When Joanne Simpson (1923-2010) was a girl, she sailed her boat beneath the puffy white clouds of Cape Cod. As a pilot, she flew her plane so high, its wings almost touched them. And when World War II began and Joanne moved to the University of Chicago, a professor asked her to teach Air Force officers about those very clouds and the weather-changing winds. I also really disliked Yan Xie, he is a typical rich-man with too much power in his hands. His treatment towards the women in this book was really upsetting to read and I did not like how he talked to Jiang Ting sometimes (again forcing heterosexual dynamics). The fact that he was a main character and the romantic interest of Jiang Ting meant I had to think about him more than I wanted to, perpetuating my further dislike for him.

an enjoyable and mildly satisfactory read. loved how all the cases were intricately woven together. the characterization was pretty good and the pacing was just right, absolutely perfect for this novel. i liked that good balance of intense action, investigation and thrill with a tap of mystery. the twists and turns caught me off guard here nd there but tbh, the flow was great so i wasn't "surprised" by half of the things but the plot points went over really smoothly and i like good writing so i won't complain that i predicted a couple things. the aesthetic of the setting was so obvious i just cant not predict half the things. nonetheless, the story was good. it held my attention. that is enough. I've said before I'm not a fan of good guys, but with this, it sparked my interest. Yan Xie in this case, is the good guy. He's all these things, but he's also a cop. A no nonsense cop. He doesn't tolerance anything out of line, and he just can't help yelling at his subordinates to do the same. When Joanne Simpson (1923–2010) was a girl, she sailed her boat beneath the puffy white clouds of Cape Cod. As a pilot, she flew her plane so high, its wings almost touched them. And when World War II began and Joanne moved to the University of Chicago, a professor asked her to teach Air Force officers about those very clouds and the weather-changing winds. As soon as the war ended, Joanne decided to seriously study the clouds she had grown to love so much. Her professors laughed. They told her to go home. They told her she was no longer needed. They told her, “No woman ever got a doctorate in meteorology. And no woman ever will.”

The Sometimes Turbulent Life of Meteorologist Joanne Simpson

After the war, Joanne wanted to study more about clouds but she was laughed at by the men at the university. Clouds weren't really that important. In fact, Rossby even told her to go home, saying "No woman ever got a doctorate in meteorology. And no woman ever will." But Joanne was stubborn. She continued to study clouds, discovering some surprising properties about them. Finally, after presenting her finding to the professors at the university, Joanne had indeed earned a doctorate of meteorology, the first woman to do so. i don't remember any cheating, but indeed JT HIDES too many things. big spoiler: he's one of the mastermind, Red Queen/Queen of Hearts, working together with the big bad, King of Spade. basically they were working together, usurping the police. JT got promotions, King of Spade got early warnings so the caught people were only the low ones, never the higher-ups. even in later part of novel, almost ending/last arc, JT literally betrayed YX in front of the enemies, with guns pointing at him. imagine the angst, disappointment, pain etc Po Yun)

After the first two arcs, the rest of the story focuses on the police trying to take down the King of Spades and figuring out who his moles are within the police. Along the way, we learn the full story behind JT's relationship with him. At times it was a bit hard to follow since there are so many names and references to previous incidents, but there were some thrilling twists along the way and the reader is constantly kept guessing who is helping which side. I had trouble putting the book down and had a couple of late nights because I was so drawn into the story that I couldn't stop reading.
