For powdery vintage fragrances, Chanel and Jean Patou are the brands to go for. This is coming from someone who owns 30 Guerlain fragrances. With Eau De Joy, a lovely bouquet of flowers appears once the initial, animalic civet fades. The animalic undertone is still present though, and with the enduring richness of jasmine and rose.

JOY is created of rare flowers in unique concentration of 10600 flowers of jasmine and 28 dozens of roses which adorn the exceptional heart of this perfume. With the time JOY attains enormous success and became the second best selling perfume of all times (the first best-selling is the legendary Chanel N°5).I have my own vintage bottle of Eau de Joy and despite the fictions of memory, reformulation of perfume, and all the years, I still think of my mother when I open the bottle. This sort of memory is more pensive than visceral yet it's very important to me. I suppose you never know where you'll to find the big 'Rosebud' moments in your memory, and I never thought the bottle of Joy would sweep me up and carry me away. But I'll tell you where the moment found me. I then bought a new EDT (produced by SA Designer Perfumes) because I was really wanting a spray and more longevity. The new EDT has a more defined opening with some aldehydes and fruit, a lasting heart of indolic jasmine and rose, and eventually transitioning to the soapy base I loved from the older EDT. [5] 1930s [ edit ] JOY by Jean Patou To my nose, the urinal note in this perfume is predominantly male, my loo has only ever smelled like this when I'm been sharing my house with a man. Concentrated female urine tends to smell more fishy and in smaller or fresher amounts, like honey. This men's urinal note was pulled off successfully in 'Kouros' though.

It is true that - at the time (until about the early 1990's), "Joy de Patou" was the most expensive fragrance to buy (maybe not to produce though) in the world, but as the years went by, tons of other fragrances became much more expensive to buy than "Joy"... (I'm thinking here about these companies for instance , which sell their fragrances for a much more bigger prices than Patou...:Parfum de Nicolai, Comme des garçons, Montale, Amouage, Maison Martin Margiela, etc... Elegance is simplicity. Joy is elegance in a bottle. For all complexity of the formula, which arrived sealed and perfectly preserved, this is a stunning jasmine simply warmed by the real civet and musks inside. It’s not dirty, it’s not extravagant in a more contemporary way (think 70’s/80’s stunners); it’s simply beautiful.

The rest of the time this smells like a lot of mixed flowers almost nondescript at times but I can identify an ylang ylang, yellow floral note not as fruity smelling (banana) like other ylang notes I've encountered (i.e. Diva by Ungaro) but definitely an ylang scent. Joy also contains a white flower of tuberose which tends to take over toward the end of the middle phase. I love tuberoses and this one is almost exactly like the tuberose in Fracas, but because Fracas has so many other white flowers supporting it (gardenia, jasmine, lily) the tuberose here is less strong and the roses are taking the lead. This is a pretty good tuberose that makes it's appearance as the roses make their exit. It smells like a floral version of a fashion show on the runway, where flowers strut their stuff before they are gone. Plans are abandoned for 'something new'. A very millennial approach. Not all customers are Millenials. We don't all want syrupy, synthetic fruitichoulis everyday of the week. We even mourn Chanel with their insipidly weak formulations now.
