The manufacturer states that “Sample analysis shows that thanks to its class-leading 1.4GWh energy throughput, the Enviro400EV will be able to cover two consecutive seven-year contract terms on typical Transport for London routes without a battery change, or typical provincial routes for up to 20 years with just one mid-life change of batteries”. A wood-effect floor adds to the cutting-edge design. New covers for the priority seats, with a contrasting colour scheme, help differentiate them from other seats for passengers who are less able to stand. The vehicles also have a larger wheelchair and buggy area, improving accessibility and helping parents getting around town. CCTV cameras have also been upgraded to provide higher-definition footage, acting as a greater deterrent and making travel even more safe and secure. Each of the new buses will be charged via dual-sided DC CCS2 plug-in connectors at up to 150kW. They are both also compatible with inverted pantograph-based opportunity replenishment at up to 300kW. While plug-in AC charging is yet to be engineered, it is not ruled out should demand require. The Enviro100EV is described by Alexander Dennis as ‘a gamechanger’. The Enviro100EV reflects the OEM’s global footprint. Its shell will be produced in China by Zhuhai Guangtong Vehicle Manufacture Co, the partner that already builds Alexander Dennis vehicles for Asia Pacific countries. From there, shells will move to Scarborough for fit-out, including driveline installation.

A focus for Alexander Dennis was placing the batteries as far forwards as possible on the Enviro400EV to minimise imposed weight on the rear axle. Battery boxes within the floor are mounted on dampers so no chassis flex is transmitted. Assembly of the Enviro400EV will be focused on the Alexander Dennis plant in Larbert, where a new production line has been established. The first customer examples, for Stagecoach and Transdev Blazefield, are well underway, although they are likely to be finished before homologation of the model is completed. Hence, they will not enter service immediately. That total takes into account power input and output as a result of regenerative braking and is thus not directly related to overall energy consumption. But the OEM says that route modelling has shown that such a capability will allow the bus to complete two, seven-year Transport for London route contract terms before battery replacement is needed. Alexander Dennis Group Engineering Director Chris Gall says that the manufacturer believes 8.5m is the “sweet spot” for the Enviro100EV, although he adds that possibility exists for a 7.9m variant later.
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (2/15/2022) – Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and BYD UK jointly announced today that their electric vehicle partnership, the UK’s leading electric bus producer, has supplied 29 BYD ADL Enviro400EV to Abellio London for use on Transport for London (TfL) route 63 between King’s Cross and Honor Oak. The electric buses are powered by BYD Iron-Phosphate Battery technology providing a longer driving range and optimised battery life. They also benefit from BYD’s innovative chassis, incorporating a ‘6 in one controller’ integrating the entire ecosystem of the bus for improved reliability.
