About this deal

After it’s finished with as many purifying steps you want to do, you can either store the tallow in a big cake with plenty of airflow around it. Keep it in the open air so that any remaining water can evaporate, or you may end up with mold. When a product lists “Fragrances” on its ingredients label, it’s not required to disclose exactly what those fragrances are. Often, they are harmful chemicals that can irritate the skin. Better to be safe than sorry—avoid anything with the term “fragrance”. Ask butcher to grind beef fat. If this is not an option, grind it in a food processor while it is very cold, or cut it into fine pieces with a knife.

Another way I love to use tallow is as a deep conditioning treatment for my hair. Read all about how I use tallow for hair here. The stuff is everywhere right now, making headlines with its all-natural, deeply moisturizing effects on the face and body. Tallow can be stored for extended periods, without refrigeration, only if kept in a sealed container to prevent oxidation. The Different Types of Tallow The balm sets smooth in its storage container once cooled. Remember, if you want a whipped version, you can make a whipped version following this method here. tallow is an ingredient rendered from beef and mutton fat. At room temperature, it's solid. However, when it's carefully purified and has undergone cosmetic manufacturing processes, it becomes oily. To be pure, tallow must come from animals such as cows, bison, or sheep. These animals have unique digestive systems and are called ruminants. The animal must be grass-fed to have all the beneficial properties for our skin's health. This is because the food alters the composition of their fat tissue. Grain-fed animals have smaller vitamin-mineral complexes and an inflammatory imbalance of fatty acids. The benefits discussed below refer to tallow derived from only grass-fed animals.Due to its antimicrobial properties, it can be used not only as a rich facial moisturiser but also as a skin-repairing balm or to treat acne breakouts. Use it to replace synthetic moisturisers, face creams, body lotions, day/night creams, and hand creams... When our infant son began to experience dry skin and eczema patches as well, tallow balm has taken permanent residence in our medicine cabinet. Thankfully, with only two ingredients, making it yourself at home is super easy. We’ll walk you through exactly how you can make your own tallow balm and why you might want to! Our Story – Why We Use Tallow The downside to eating lard is that it’s likely to be derived from pigs that are contaminated with toxins. Pork/pigs are commonly raised in unhealthy environments that causes them to become ill, and this can affect both their meat and fat. Risks and Side Effects Tallow is balm is made from rendered beef fat. I get my beef fat from our local farm/butcher shop, Iverstiens. Local shops are a more sustainable option because they focus on providing high quality and natural meat products to the local community. They take the best care of their animals and they are VERY transparent about their agriculture practices.

In terms of nutrient content, the highest-quality beef tallow comes from grass-fed cattle, as opposed to those conventionally raised on feedlots and fed grains. Grass-fed cattle tend to store more omega-3s, CLA and other beneficial compounds in their bodies compared to cows that are fed less healthy diets. Tallow that contains no more than 0.15 percent insoluble impurities, alongside hide-derived products and milk products, is excluded from that list. Not only is tallow moisturizing for your skin, containing heaps of beneficial fats the skin absorbs like butter (literally,) but it’s also toxin and synthetic-free. Keep in mind what type of container you’re straining into. You want something that the finished, hardened tallow can easily pop out of. I like a big metal mixing bowl. For solid tallow balm, pour balm into glass jar. Allow to harden in the refrigerator. When solid, let balm come to room temperature before using. Compared to other cooking fats and oils, including olive oil and butter, tallow has a higher smoke point around 420 to 480 degrees Fahrenheit. Smoke point refers to the temperature at which an oil starts to burn, smoke and lose many of its nutritional benefits.
