The drollery mostly references the yuppie holocaust that the Ronald Reagan administration had loosed on the world, but the jokes blossomed in relevance over the decades that followed. As a variety of featurettes contrasting the various versions remind us, Verhoeven’s cut was rated X by the MPAA and so trims were made, most famously to the scene where the ED-209 mows down an executive during a conference.

Note: We focussed mainly on the Disc 1 Director's Cut in 4K, and with that found some temporary issues which were all resolved with some gentle cleaning of the disc.Having already purchased the Blu-ray version of this I still went ahead and bought this new 4K UHD version as it is my favourite film. The very weighty metallic sound of RoboCop’s stride is intoxicating—a promise of violence to be unleashed that’s pronouncedly fulfilled.

The second platter also includes one of the notorious TV versions of the film too, albeit without much attention paid to image quality, which is to be expected. For what it’s worth, Verhoeven is right: The longer, gorier version is funnier, reveling in the sheer pointlessness of this machine’s depravity.

I appreciate that Arrow has taken a page from Criterion’s playbook and started putting booklets in some of their releases — it’s a nice touch that serves as a reminder that once upon a time, the vast majority of thoughts about movies were set down on paper. Beyond those Limited Edition extras, the package itself is excellent and utterly comprehensive although - as is now standard for Arrow - there is a question mark over whether it offers anything that fans won't already have from their Arrow Blu-ray set (and what fans don't own that?

Dialogue is rendered with precision, largely disseminated across the frontal array, with a few more expansive crowded moments, whilst environmental and futuristic noises (there's a tremendous sound as Robocop whips open the boardroom doors in the final act) get prime placement, delivered cleanly and with resonance.As RoboCop's memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen, Dressed To Kill) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above.
