Either way, I have used markers, pens, highlighters, pencils, they all work well, it just depends on what brands etc you use, I have used 2 different brands of highlighters and one runs more easily through the paper through the other so I would be wary of that if it's bothersome, though I use this for doodles/mini pictures so I do not mind it. The paper is different to what I usually gravitate towards (silkier cheaper paper) - it seems more textured which I suppose makes sense if it's meant for mixed media.
