About this deal

There were some interesting plots twists that explained the mysteries in the magic, without feeling like cheap tricks. So when she finally decided to let Nisong go, when she stopped to evaluate why she was trying to be Nisong and what that actually meant and that she didn’t need to be that person, I was so happy for her. I had the pleasure of reading all three of these novels and would recommend starting at the beginning so you understand how Lin became an Empress and discovered bone shard magic. The characters developed and grew and all were left in a place that felt right, where they should be and tied things up in a natural way.

Yet I couldn’t help but miss the Lin we were presented with in the first book, the one who wanted to help everyone without manipulating them in the way her father did. It’s also where I fell in love with the characters who started out with such big and honourable ideals. Down on the South West coast of Wales is a woman juggling bookselling, reading, writing and parenting. Bare bones: Two years after the battle on Gaelung island where Nisong and her army of constructs failed to take over Phoenix empire, we find our protagonists in worst positions than they were when we've last seen them. Stewart shows us that redemption can be sought even if the world you live in makes it hard to do so. If the first trilogy by Andrea Stewart is already this well-polished, I think the potential for her next series to be superior is massive, and I am excited to find out.

So events from the ending of the 2nd book, and the start of this book, really keep tensions high - the perfect platform to launch an incredible last book. My enjoyment of this novel would have been so much better had I remembered more from the previous novels. I wanted to blame my job for me not getting into this third book as much (I listened on audio), but reading other people's reviews it's clear that the first half was just not very engaging.

I read The Bone Shard Daughter for the first time on the first day of May 2020; I finished the book the next day. Something that really surprised me is that there are characters that I detested in the other books that I grudgingly came to appreciate in this one. Whether it be our main character Lin, or our favorite creature Mephi, we know their story inside and out. Having her first person narration gave us insight into Lin’s doubts and insecurities, so we do know she was always questioning if she was doing the right thing.

When her (admittedly ambitious) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer didn't pan out, she instead turned to writing books. Different factions war for power, all for different reasons and Stewart manages to show them all as genuine and motivating. Beth: I think perhaps the biggest surprise for me at the start was Jovis’ storyline, how he had been wrenched away from Lin and how his love for Mephi was being used against him. Surrounded by rugged coastline, dramatic castles and rolling countryside, Beth loves nothing more than shutting her door on all that and curling up with a cuppa and a book instead. The Drowning Empire trilogy will take readers on a journey that is both dazzling, addictive and moving. However, I can safely say your investment and enjoyment of The Bone Shard War will rely a lot on the level of connection you place with the main characters. The Bone Shard War, the last book in The Drowning Empire trilogy, excelled in its construct and beauty. i'll say some nice things first: there's an interesting plot twist that i didn't see coming and i liked how it made sense. I’m a bit sad to see the series come to an end, but I can’t wait to see what else Andrea Stewart comes out with next. I cannot tell you how much I adored Bone Shard Daughter and was so excited to have a possible all time favourite series, however the books have gone from a 5 to a 4 to a 3 and I just have so many thoughts and feels.
