About this deal

To be told that things are not what they seem is to encourage us always to be on the lookout for new interpretations. There are some masterly touches which provide symbolism and humour; the pet raven and the farting dog! While any overt connections between angels and insects might seem tentative or suspicious, they are herein linked on sonic as well as philosophical levels.

We acknowledge (and remind and warn you) that they may, in fact, be entirely unrepresentative of the actual reviews by any other measure. Amazingly, it is accepted - even though he is a penniless man of ordinary family, and she is rich and high-born. At the house and surrounding estate, William works to sort through Lord Alabaster’s collection of scientific specimens – though the old man does not leave the house himself, still he has his passions and interests. She says that when it started she was too young to understand but, after she saw herself through the eyes of her fiancé, she felt guilty. Combining romance with literary intrigue, the work is steeped in nineteenth-century culture and happens to contain several references to Swedenborg. The closest it comes is when Miss Crompton tells Adamson, “There are people in houses who know everything, yet remain invisible. At the same time, their settings and topics make them cousins to the German novellas of the nineteenth century, which like Angels and Insects were highly symbolic works, densely packed and interpretatively complex. Leaving aside the overly flowery descriptions, and the occasionally clunky dialogue – characters often speak as though they are scientific treatises themselves – another problem in “Morpho Eugenia” is a certain absence of heart.

The action in the book is often so refreshing, because the reader has been waiting for chapters for something to actually happen! William does not do anything in the novella, and his thoughts ultimately remain more or less under control. Dos relatos victorianos llenos de elementos mágicos y encantadores: desde manuales de entomología, pasando por la poesía de Tennyson hasta sesiones de espiritismo. The Tennyson of nature being “red in tooth in claw” in “Morpho Eugenia” becomes in “The Conjugial Angel” a core presence for bravely holding to the immortal qualities of love, beauty, and the soul. In the first she completely overloads the reader with information about insects, and produces yet another one of her pastiches with Matty Crompton's long fairy story (though actually, this is pretty good), while both Matty and Eugenia remain maddeningly enigmatic as characters, and the grand climax of the story is rushed over.Eugenia, whose name connects her to the butterfly, morpho eugenia (of the novella’s title) is described like an insect in her pregnancy: “his wife slept alone in her white nest, and swelled slowly, developing large breasts and a creamy second chin. Angels and Insects consists of two decent-sized novellas, Morpho Eugenia (that would be the insects) and The Conjugial Angel (more obviously: the angels). William realises that he has been used to conceal the incest and that the children (who bear no resemblance to him) are Edgar's. There are several characters at the séance, but the focus is on Emily Jesse, who was once Emily Tennyson, sister of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. There is intrigue and secrecy and Byatt plays with the surname alabaster, using the whiteness of the skin of Adamson’s wife to symbolize purity.

I’ll show her how she can echo those promises someday for herself, if she chooses, at her Confirmation. The second novella, whose name I have forgotten, is worth reading, especially if you are a fan of Alfred Tennyson, the nineteenth century poet.
