About this deal

If your ballast is not dead, the needle on an analog multimeter will move to the right across the measuring scale. Otherwise, the needle won't move at all. In addition, the current flowing to HID lamps needs to be regulated very precisely, as too little is equally bad for the long-term health of the luminaire. HID ballasts also convert DC to AC current where necessary and regulate the flow of electricity within the specific and relatively narrow ranges required by these light types. Electronic light ballasts Another way to see if your harness/relay(s) is indeed the issue is to bypass the harness by connecting some leads between the positive and negative battery to the leads of the input of the ballasts. If the HID’s power up and work fine, then your relay(s)/harness may need to be replaced. Usually, HID bulbs cannot run on DC power. Quality ballast acts as DC to AC converter so that you can use the normal DC power source in the car to light the bulbs efficiently. Simply speaking, a ballast is essential if you want to enjoy the real strengths of HID bulbs.

At the end of life, many types of high-intensity discharge lamps exhibit a phenomenon known as cycling. These lamps can be started at a relatively low voltage. As they heat up during operation, however, the internal gas pressure within the arc tube rises and a higher voltage is required to maintain the arc discharge. As a lamp gets older, the voltage necessary to maintain the arc eventually rises to exceed the voltage provided by the electrical ballast. As the lamp heats to this point, the arc fails and the lamp goes out. Eventually, with the arc extinguished, the lamp cools down again, the gas pressure in the arc tube is reduced, and the ballast can once again cause the arc to strike. The effect of this is that the lamp glows for a while and then goes out, repeatedly. More sophisticated ballast designs detect cycling and give up attempting to start the lamp after a few cycles. If power is removed and reapplied, the ballast will make a new series of startup attempts. If only one HID bulb went out, then you’d be almost certain that that particular bulb has burnt out and needs to be replaced. If this is the case, simply proceed straight to taking that bulb out and inspecting it. Replace the HID bulb as required and it should fix your problem. Temperatures: High temperatures can drive ballasts to overheat and burn. In contrast, low temperatures can keep them from starting. a b "HID Lamps Containing Radiation Emitters" (PDF). NEMA. It is like a transformer that converts your battery voltage into an appropriate amount of power required to keep your headlights on. The ballast is designed to detect bulb shutdown. HID HEADLIGHT BALLAST REPLACEMENT - Also known as headlight control unit, a crucial part of hid lighting system, provides the voltage needed to start the lamp and regulates the electrical current of the light once it is lit. A failed ballast will cause your bulb to burn. When the voltage is input, the output power of the ballast can be kept constant at about 35W or 50W to protect the HID bulb from damage. The ballast fits either the left or right hid headlights. If you get to this point, and you’re getting the proper output voltage from the b

If you examine the ballast physically, you might find that its casing/housing is swollen. You may also come across burn marks, moisture, or oil leaks.HID lamps are used in high-performance bicycle headlamps, as well as flashlights and other portable lights, because they produce a great amount of light per unit of power. As the HID lights use less than half the power of an equivalent tungsten-halogen light, a significantly smaller and lighter-weight power supply can be used. You can use a multimeter to test the HID ballast. Don a pair of safety gloves, grab a screwdriver, and follow the steps below. Are you experiencing problems with your cars lighting system? Do you feel frustrated and can no longer enjoy a ride in peace? Well, the problem could be your bulb or ballast. But the big question is, how do you know if it is your ballast or D2R bulb that has developed issues? Any good HID conversion kit will come with two ballasts included. Make sure when purchasing the kit, you're getting two ballasts that are made specifically for use in automotive HID lighting systems, or you run the risk of damaging your new, expensive headlights. But sometimes lower quality or faulty ballasts will emit noticeable “humms” which can be very annoying for some people. Usually this is not something to worry about, but it shouldn’t be happening and is normally a sign of a loose transformer, loose screws or another faulty component. Ballasts vs. Bulbs: Which to Spend Money On
