About this deal

Your story-world is really vivid and full of interesting details. How much research and world-building did you do before starting to write, and how much evolved as you went along? Now you could argue that this isn't the point of the story. You'd be right, too, because it isn't. The point is to show found family, and perseverance. And that part is heartwarming, and the ending is lovely, which is the reason why initially my rating was higher. I think if you’re looking for something with friendship, bravery and adventure, then this is definitely the book for you!'

Perfect for reading out loud, and just the right amount of scary, this has the feel of a classic in the making. - Bethany Strout, Tattered Cover Bookstore Swept into the bright hustle and bustle of New York, Lily, Robert and Malkin discover shadowy secrets lie beneath its surface. For there are chilling goings-on in their hotel… A huge thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review! A powerful, uplifting and moving story of a teenage girl's battle against losing her sight and keeping her friendships.

Holy Gouda! This spectacular story of friendship, belonging and daring adventure had me hooked from start to finish! Milou’s ‘sense’ is an intriguing talent and one that plays a big role in the story. Can you tell us a little more about it? Is it like intuition? Or does it have a supernatural element? The eldest , Milou , i s convinced her puppet-making parents didn’t want to leave her . The book describes the adventures of the five ‘unadoptable’ children as they escape the orphanage and search the city for Milou’s birth family. Our director of public affairs, Alison Woodhead, gives her take on The Unadoptables, a new children’s book which has come in for criticism in the adoption community. I was so excited about this book and fully expected to love it. I was ready to support my fellow Dutch folk and rec this to everyone. I have been thinking a lot about this book and its unfortunate title. I am the mother of two adopted children, and neither of them, 16 year old and 11 year old, want to read this book due to the title. My husband hates the title. And I remember how much I hated it when I was handed a review ARC initially. I realized that it was trying to reclaim the word, that "unadoptable" should always be in ironic quote marks. I moved past it to read the story which is about how the children are lovable and absolutely adoptable. The impact on adopted children, however, is telling about how successful that is. It isn't. spectacular wit, dazzling theatrical wonder and huge amount of hope, courage and everlasting friendship. A book to absolutely fall in love with. - Cerrie Burnell, author of The Girl With the Shark's Teeth

I did a lot of drafts, adding details layer by layer. I think there were about eight drafts in total. The first draft didn’t have Rotman or Edda in it, for example. When they say writing is rewriting, I find that absolutely applies to how I write a book. Ahora, tengo que admitir que no me llegó como pensé que lo haría ni la historia tampoco. Los middle-grade que me marcan son esos que: Most people upset by the title are unlikely to have got much further, but some who read it are also angry about the content. It’s certainly true that the book has a feast of scenes that might trigger heartache in people whose lives have been touched by adoption . I found the ‘line-ups’, in which the orphans are presented, grubby and desperate, to potential adopters, particularly painful. When Milou discovers the orphanage matron's plot to sell her and her friends to a nefarious figure, she hatches an escape plan. Using only the clues left with her as a baby (a coffin-shaped basket, a cat puppet, a velvet dress), Milou and her friends dive headlong into a new adventure outside the orphanage's walls. The Unadoptables has everything: evil ship captains, lifelike puppets, a charming Dutch setting complete with windmills and canals, a ragtag group of orphans looking for a family, and a mystery at the heart of it all. Perfect for reading out loud, and just the right amount of scary, this has the feel of a classic in the making. Bethany Strout, Tattered Cover Bookstore
