Style shouldn’t compromise comfort. This is one of the main reasons I adore the Utility trend, you can be comfy yet stylish at the same time. The muted, earthy colour palette of the utilitarian style is so easy to wear. Khaki, navy, grey, brown, black, green, beige it’s the perfect colour palette to play layer up with. The trend does nod to the Military a lot with it’s colour palette and fits.
BoohooMan dropped this trend over a month or so a go. As soon as it dropped I found myself lusting after so many pieces, the tones and fits just looked like something I wanted to expand my style into. I’m all about comfort with my style lately.
Gone are the days of wearing super smart looking shoes with tapered trousers. I much prefer to wear utility joggers with an oversized hoody or an over sized sweatshirt. The trend consisted of military inspired looks, with laid back fits and green, beige and grey playing the main theme of the looks. I was kindly gifted 2 outfits from BoohooMan that I instantly fell in love with while looking at the page of the Utilitarian looks.
The Looks – Look 1
The first looks is my favourite look out of the two. An all grey 2 piece. I’m a sucker for a coordination, so when I saw this outfit I knew I just had to have it. The shirt is a revere collar. A collar that over the years I have come to love. At first I never thought a revere collar suited me due to having a hairy chest but over the years I have come to embrace my hairy chest and wear more revere collars. The pattern of the shirt is exactly the same of that of the trousers. Grey marl type of pattern. I wore a roll neck underneath the shirt as the weather wasn’t the best.
The trousers are almost like a smart jogger. With cuffs on the bottom to get it that easy, laid back approach. I love the detailing of the side pockets on both sides. It’s just that level of detail which gives it the cool utility trend look. Elasticated waistband with a tie to give it that sporty appeal which is also mixed in within the Utility Trend. The big trend of the utility trend is the “Dad trainer” A chunky trainer which has made it’s reappearance from the 90’s. The chunkier and the uglier the trainer the more trendier they are. I’ve always been a fan of chunky trainers even before they became cool to wear them. I rocked chunky trainers in secondary school to the horror of my friends.
The second look is all about layering. With it being Spring you never know what the weather is going to do. Only the other week was we basking in temperatures that was close to our summer temperatures. So you still have to throw on a few layers. So this outfit is perfect for just that but also showcasing the Utility trend perfectly. The base of the outfit was a Shirt/jacket in a beige, mustard colour. I added my own white t-shirt underneath to add another layer to the outfit. Then to finish the layering I added my own leather jacket over the top to give the outfit a little more of a hardness to the earthy tones of the utility items.
The trousers on this outfit are again, a smart jogger. You could get away with wearing them within a formal setting. This time they do not have a cuffed jogger but imitate a smart trouser. Again, they have an elasticated waist which is perfect for ease and comfort. I have then teamed this outfit up with my super chunky trainers to create an on trend look.
Pose Pose Pose
Doing the photography for this trend I wanted to do something a little different than what I normally do. I wanted to do some action shots that really showed off the outfit so well. I love playing with my photography and trying to get unique shots. Something as simple as standing on your toes is something I played with as well as a kicking pose that worked so well. I really want to push myself from now on to try and get some really unique looking shots. Rather than just standing in front of a wall or down a street. I want to showcase the best for the outfit and really showcase it it’s best form.
This trend has to be one of my favourite trends that comes around every now and again. Looking to the summer it looks as if it is here to stay. I’m seeing more of the trend starting to trickle through on BoohooMan and other fashion retailers for the Summer. As I work for Marks and Spencer’s I can really see this trend while I’m dressing mannequins and through our stock also. It’s a big trend for Spring and Summer that I’m most certainly living for. Are you a fan?
