About this deal

She's well aware that her manners are bad and in this story she actually voices the fact that her naughtiness is due to being a homemade doll. The Sylvia Venus illustrations in the 'Amelia Jane' series are drawn in a totally different way from her pictures in earlier books.

Amelia Jane - Wikipedia

Although this series of short stories are similar to previous books, some follow a slightly different structure of the other toys being unkind to Amelia Jane first, purely because she’s always previously been mean. Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. You've got to wonder about that doll because she seems to get great delight in being plain nasty - perhaps she has an inferiority complex although I can't see why because she's the biggest doll in the nursery.

Amelia Jane! by Enid Blyton | Goodreads Good Idea, Amelia Jane! by Enid Blyton | Goodreads

Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. She was educated in a private school and thought that she would become a musician until she realized that writing was her passion. Such a thought is actually espoused at the beginning of the next story but we all know it's pretty futile to entertain such an idea. In this book, she snips the tail off the pink rabbit, squirts Tom the soldier with water and gets up to mischief at the beach. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. The big doll now wants to learn how to lasso so that she can add it to her list of toy-annoying skills and the cowboy doll, who is not averse to a bit of annoying himself, teaches her. But the toys do sometimes manage to get her back - like painting spots on her to make her think she's got the measles, and making a special record to tell her what they really think of her! However, as it turns out, Blyton's writing style is crowd pleasing and before I knew it, all of my kids were into the stories with my oldest *asking* for it to be read. Also the stories keep on ending with "yes, Amelia will be good for a while, but no one believes that she will stay good!
