So what makes the One Touch different from the Sodastream Fizzi? Both inserting the carbonating cylinder and the water bottle require that you follow the exact same procedure as with the Sodastream Fizzi, and this machine also only takes 1 L-sized bottle. The SodaStream machines and other soda makers are typically costly upfront, but they easily pay for themselves within a few months to a few years, depending on the frequency of use. It’s the most cost-effective choice to start drinking custom sodas as soon as possible for as little money as possible.

You can find third-party CO2 canister providers, although those gas cylinders are not guaranteed to work with your soda maker. One element where the design trumps function is the drip tray, which is not included at all on this model. The area underneath the bottle is just a smooth slope, so if anything leaks during the carbonation process, it will fall right onto the counter, forcing you to clean it up. However, the drip tray is only really necessary when you overfill the bottle or the outside of the bottle is wet from the sink, so as long as you’re careful, it probably won’t be a big deal. It’s a great starting product and an especially good choice for occasional carbonated water drinkers or those just getting into this as a hobby or habit.

CR’s take: The highly-rated SodaStream Terra is among the easiest soda makers to use: Insert your bottle top in a clamp, push the clamp into place, and press the button on top. The Terra offers other bubbly benefits; for one, it needs no electricity to work. Performance-wise, it doesn’t ice up when operating; its cap stays on under pressure; and because it has no preset carbonation levels, you can vary the amount of fizz by the number of times you press the button.
