The city of Bombay is a prominent character with its rains, its local trains, its Udupi restaurants and architecture, and scenes at Malabar Hill and Nariman Point, at Colaba and King’s Circle.

And if these had been addressed, perhaps I would have been more sympathetic to her and her life choices. it also had brilliant settings, jumping around between northern England, london, paris and barcelona when we see the different stages of our main characters life.

I think about all the years I have struggled to articulate myself in my own language, pushing my words into my body instead. With unironic uses of stars and constellations that propel plot and navigate our narrator, I'm not quite sure how many filtered sunsets I needed to read through to get to any meaning whatsover. For me personally, it is amongst the best articulations of how it felt to grow up middle class in an emerging India.

This is for those with teen angst, those in first-love relationships, those surfing along the honeymoon waves, and everyone stuck in suburban sensationalism thinking they know and feel everything after watching a single Youtube video essay on internet culture. I am not the kind of person who lets myself curl up softly in the folds of someone else, but you took my mottled shell in your gentle fingers and I slid out, wanting. Ira had just come out of a relationship with Kaiz, which broke when he moves to the US for higher studies.

Unnamed protagonist with body image issues is remembering her past life and is now over-analyzing her current one. This connection to the author’s past was the catalyst for an eclectic series of observations about his life and work. The descriptions of food are particularly memorable, emphasising the tensions between her appetite and what our narrator will allow herself. the descriptions of a spanish summer truly transport you there - you can feel the sticky, suffocating heat radiating off the pages.

The book captures the changing spirit of Bombay/ Mumbai through political events and the (re)development of its urban landscape that provides a backdrop to the story of Ira and Kartik. some aspects are reminiscent of saltwater, from the parental / child relationship to the distinct northern voice, but it feels like milk teeth goes further as andrews' wades into fears, darkness and uncharted territory without resolution.If you enjoy a book in which every other sentence is an overwritten flowery, cheesy metaphor or simile, then this is the one for you. much like its predecessor, milk teeth is a novel that forgoes traditional form structure and all barriers of language. After the big read Shantaram, I was looking for a relatively easy read to ensure I don’t lose my recently regained reading mojo. I loved the short chapters and the way they jumped around to show girlhood, teenagehood and young adulthood as a women in its entirety.
