About this deal

In the Hook Jaw limited series, Hook is revealed to be female. However, the same series also describes fictionalised accounts of the shark's exploits being serialised in Action comic, so it's likely this is an alternate version of Hook Jaw. Likewise, the 2000 AD version appears to be a total reinterpretation of the character.

The month in comics: a hot neon safari into the world of

Gelder was a first class rich bastard with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. ‘His’ Paradise Island resort was effectively just land stolen from the island natives, who he thought nothing about exterminating. His henchmen dealt out beatings and threw men to their deaths in the shark infested waters of his lagoon. Even with death all around, Gelder was still motivated by money and believed people would visit his island resort. He made Hook Jaw into a side show attraction when logic suggested killing the beast. Ultimately his greed was his undoing, and thanks to Sharkie, Gelder went to his grave, still trying to buy his salvation. The natives grew frustrated and sought the council of their shaman, who said that it was Mason, who had been scarred by Hook Jaw, who led the shark to their island. Against Sharkie's protests, the islanders used Mason as live bait to draw Hook Jaw near. Mason escaped and fought Hook Jaw up close once again. Not about to let their effort go to waste, Gunn hatches a plan to retrieve the gold from the bottom of the sea. Unfortunately, the territory has been claimed by Hook Jaw, who is now prowling the seabed where the gold lies. The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. This doesn't have any other stories of Hook Jaw from after that, this just being the complete original series. Greaser was the chief engineer on McNally’s oil rig. He initially sided with McNally in any conflict but as the story developed, saw the error of his ways and supported Mason. He met his fate in the jaws of the Great White attempting to deal it a fatal blow with some power cables. Alas, Hook Jaw was merely stunned. Action had a significant impact on British comics of the 1970s. Boys comics had not really changed since the Eagle of the 1950s. Although featuring some great art, they seemed worthy, juvenile and simplistic. Lots of straight up war stories, endless footballers, runners, wrestlers and Robot Archie...

There was a previous book by Spitfire Comics (now out of print) that published the two pre ban story lines but this one is far superior quality in terms of the art being cleaned up and includes not only the summer special story & the annual story but also the previously never published what would have been the end of the story line had it not been banned, much more in depth than the rather rushed, tame & disappointing version I read all those years ago & complete with all the blood, guts & gore we came to know and love !!!! Sport’s Not For Losers!: When amateur athlete Dan Walker is injured, he has no choice other than to try and whip his disinterested, disdainful younger brother Len into shape and taking his place. a b Paetz, D. Hook Jaw took a break for a couple of weeks before returning on the island of El Salvados, where Mason, now recovered, is working for Dr. Gelder, the owner of ‘Paradise Island’. Gelder’s motivation, like McNally before him, is money. He drives the island natives away from their homes, is callous to everyone and will stop at nothing to be rid of Hook Jaw. A bounty hunt is arranged with the expected and inevitable loss of life, Hook Jaw is eventually captured and used as an attraction, where members of the public can fight the shark for a huge cash prize. Sharkie, one of the natives and a friend of Mason, offers to fight Hook Jaw, hoping to use the money to force Gelder to leave his people alone. The fight goes as badly as expected and it is left to Mason to save Sharkie. Hook Jaw eats a film crew who are capturing the event and is soon free. Gelder is unimpressed, and refusing to pay Sharkie, he sends his men to drive the natives from the island. Probationer: A working-class man finds himself being drawn against his will into the criminal underworld. After the ban, the art was taken on by John Stokes, and was much improved. Stokes had a very clean style, although his early issues heavily referenced Sola’s work. His other Action work included three episodes of “ Death Game 1999” and some “ Dredger” stories. If a scientific cure for death was ever to be invented, you’d presume everywhere would get a lot more crowded. That does not seem to be the case in the sparsely populated environs of A.D.: After Death, a collaboration by two US comics talents currently at the top of their game. Scott Snyder is the writer who has had the keys to the Batmobile for the past five years, overseeing the main Batman comic series and shaping the fate of DC’s most important character. Writer-artist Jeff Lemire is similarly in demand, having recently been tasked with defining the biggest villain in the Marvel universe as writer of a new series focusing on Thanos, everyone’s favourite bumpy-chinned cosmic conqueror. Anyway it all came crashing down for 'Action' when the newspapers started campaigns against it. The 23rd October 1976 edition was printed… but never made it to the newsagents. Most of the print run was pulped and if you have a copy of it, it fetches very high prices today. When the comic returned on 4th December 1976 it had been gutted as effectively as one of Hookjaw's victims. The violence, gore and anti-establishment style of the comic had been totally removed. The killer shark was now only allowed to kill bad guys and then only out-of-shot. The fun had gone out of it too and within a year 'Action' was merged with 'Battle' and 'Hookjaw' was gone completely. Britain's 'Action' comic should not be confused with the American comic of the same name that featured to first appearance of Superman. IPC's 'Action' was a UK anthology comic for boys that first appeared on Valentine's Day 1976. It was part of a new breed of adventure comic which were aiming their stories at a slightly older readership than comics had up to that point… more teenagers than the under tens. The team behind 'Action'… John Wagner, Steve McManus and Pat Mills had just launched 'Battle' for IPC and were about to go onto create the ever popular '2000AD'. 'Action' took the approach of taking ideas from popular (and quite adult) mainstream movies of the day and putting it's own spin on them. Pipe wrenches come in a variety of sizes. They can be as small as six inches in length to over four feet. Each size can work on a limited range of pipes sizes.Mason escaped the destruction of the rig and finds himself working for the exploitative Doctor Gelder, who is trying to turn the island of El Salvados in the Gulf of Mexico into a resort called Paradise Island, with little respect for the natives or the marine life. Hook Jaw soon arrives and begins to disrupt Gelder's plans, leading to the developer putting a bounty on the shark. The bounty hunters take heavy casualties and rapidly become more extreme, culminating in explosives opening up a volcanic rift under the island. In the chaos Mason is killed by Hook Jaw, and his furious native friend Sharkie kills Gelder in revenge as El Salvados is evacuated. Hook Jaw, finding the seas around the island polluted, moves on again. [20] Titan says their mini-series is set to be an intense modern iteration of the titular ocean predator.

Hook Jaw is back – and Titan Comics has snagged him!

Much has been made of 'Hookjaw's environmental agenda, but I think this is stretching a point really. It's true the first strip does feature a villainous oil rig owner who cares nothing for how much he pollutes, but this is more by way of giving us a bad guy to jeer at. By the second adventure the green agenda is much less clear, by the third story it has disappeared completely and the villains are merely robbers. Hook Jaw - the comic so controversial, it got banned! The diagram also shows the position of the small internal button, sometimes called a jigger button, that helps to take some of the strain off the hook and bar closure. This internal button must be placed accurately so that the hook and bar can sit closed correctly. If the jigger button is not taking the strain of the waistband, then the hook and bar closure will look as though it is pulling open. Barker, Martin (11 August 1990).
