Last week, the court saw videotaped interviews made within days of the killing of Jason Corbett, in which his children, then aged ten and eight, said they had seen their father angry and abusive towards his wife Molly, and they reported seeing him hit her on occasion. Can you imagine being eight years old in your first days at a new school, in a new country, your father has been killed by your stepmother, and everyone is looking at you, the new girl? Can you imagine trying to make friends when you are the troubled girl? The N.C. Court of Appeals and the N.C. Supreme Court found that the exclusion of those statements prohibited the accused from making their case in claiming self defence. It has been widely speculated that either or both children could testify at the retrial.They have both entered guilty pleas to manslaughter charges, in return for the District attorney dropping murder charges. After the verdicts, as Tom Martens and Molly Corbett were led off to prison, the jury foreman described his struggle. Molly's friend: I don't know. I think that she is cautiously optimistic. But I think that there's a lot of hopelessness, too. It's hard to trust the system after what they've gone through.

She told police the children said they had seen their father grab Molly Martens and push her into a wall in the house. Your honour, her betrayal and infliction of pain continued for years. I was used by her. All I have ever been was a piece on her chess board.
Tracey Lynch: She was just very controlling. She was angry, I would say. And for someone who was about to get married, you know, she just wasn't herself. … She stayed in bed curled up in a ball. She didn't come out and socialize with anybody. While my friends are out having fun and going to parties, I am 17 years old, and in therapy learning how to live with the fact that I lied and helped the Martens escape full justice for taking my father’s life. Molly and Tom were immediately sentenced to 20-to-25 years in prison. That's when Molly turned around in court and said something to her mother. The first trial, which began July 17, 2017 and ran for 17 days, revealed that Jason Corbett (39) was beaten to death at his home in the Meadowlands golf course community of Wallburg, North Carolina. Davidson County assistant district attorneys claimed that Molly Corbett and Martens beat Jason to death with a baseball bat and a paving stone. It is a travesty of justice that Molly Martens wasn’t charged with first degree murder as was considered by the District Attorney.
