About this deal

He holds himself to full account, and doesn't blame his BPD for the bad things he's done, but he wants others who may have the same struggles to know they're not alone. He doesn’t delve into where his BPD came from, although it’s fairly obvious his Mum and Dad weren’t Mr and Mrs Perfect Pants Parents. my mum recommended me this and although its a little goofy and lowbrow, i'm seriously glad i read it. My adult career has been trying to undo everything that I taught myself growing up about how to be like my dad. This book made me understand i wasn’t crazy by hearing a « voice » in my head who literally hates me.

At all the parts where you could hear the in emotion in his voice, and hear him sobbing as he narrates some of most difficult stuff in the book makes me just want to give him a big hug.Tracini was also very open and honest about his mental health during this time too and regularly posted videos about his struggles.

This is not a comfortable book to read, but it is a brave, important and necessary book that shines a light on a lot of the issues around mental health and how we as a society deal with it. Started this audiobook with no real intention of relating, but knowing there are others out there with similar thoughts really helped me cope with a bad few months. Whether you can completely relate, relate to just some bits or even not at all, it's his truth, in fact it's so many of our truths.Joe had a series of rock-bottoms and then a basement and he takes us through the horrendous addiction hopping and base-line desire to kill himself in detail. He left Hollyoaks in 2014 after a three-year stint, thinking he would go on to something bigger and better. I didn’t know how to talk to another person without getting a deck of cards out or without entertaining. Anyone and everyone should give it a read or listen perhaps for it's one of the best books out there.

Sometimes there is no split screen, just Tracini explaining that talking about killing himself in front of so many people is a form of insurance – the more people he tells he won’t do it, the less likely he is to do so. I wish he’d covered why BPD is now considered a pejorative term (outdated and often catch all for people who have had trauma, they often don’t get well or the help they need because they’re judged as narcissistic, unstable/unable to get better, it’s not a coincidence that most people with BPD are AFAB); I don’t love that he talks about going off all medication…meds saved my life and through most of my 30s I didn’t want to be on them…I fear his story will encourage people to do the same. He knows that nobody will turn up to see him; they will be there for Mick, the abusive loudmouth in the BPD T-shirt. Having Holly in my life has made me feel more capable of some sort of future, though I can’t think long term. He's starred in many TV shows including Hollyoaks, Coming of Age and The Great Outdoors, and he's the host of the BAFTA winning 'The Dengineers'. Not only is this book moving but I feel it will be educational not only for those without the illness, but for those with it to know that it’s okay to feel these things. I love Joe's honest videos and his hilarious dance routines and commentaries and found the first half of the book engaging and insightful.

But through this book, Joe is also an incredible advocate for those struggling with addiction and/or their mental health. His cousin, who had flunked university, taught him in the shed at the bottom of the family’s garden in Kent. The only reason that I’m able to be so honest is because I’m doing it to the back of an iPhone,” he says. In his new book - Ten Things I Hate About Me: How to Stay Alive With a Brain That's Trying to Kill You - Joe Tracini shares his experiences of BPD and suicidal thoughts.I don't owe Joe Tracini my life, but I do owe him for the silly joy of his captivatingly cringy dance videos in lockdown. Being able to relate to someone on such a deep level and feel truly SEEN for the first time in my life… might have just saved my life. He lives in Hackney, east London, but is staying at his mother’s S-shaped bungalow in Rochester, Kent, when we speak on Zoom. In this book I want to try and explain what life is like when you have a brain that is essentially trying to murder you every day. In the videos, he explains that being suicidal is a mindset, not an event – and it is a mindset he is constantly trying to understand.
