From the taste of this sauce, I imagine that the fresh ingredients are all fermented. This isn’t surprising, as Tabasco Original uses a fermented tabasco pepper mash as its base. The result is a blazing hot sauce that is potent, even in small quantities. If you aren’t familiar with extra spicy sauces, then Tabasco scorpion may give you a run for your money! People don’t expect this level of heat from Tabasco, so it makes an excellent conversation starter. It carries a legend’s name, but with surprise inside! It’s sort of the needed addition to the Tabasco line to give it street-cred with the real hot sauce heat-seekers out there. If you’re a Tabasco fan, this is no doubt a fun collectible. Tabasco Scorpion was supposed to be a limited edition, but people went crazy for it so now it’s here to stay.

If you want to try this unique hot sauce, you can likely find it in the grocery store next to Tabasco original. You can also get it online here for a bit of a markup. The onion in the sauce also brings a nice earthy zing. And thankfully the cane sugar doesn’t come on too strong — it adds just enough sweetness to level off the heat and it’s not too distracting. It can be hard to tell when you eat one fresh, because the blinding heat takes over in a matter of seconds. This builds to a point where you’ll have to stop if you don’t want to be rushing for milk, versus regular Tabasco where you can go all day. Usability The heat will be too much for some, so it’s not as usable as the original – but it’s still plenty usable. To round out the sauce, Tabasco actually uses their own original sauce as an ingredient. I find this amusing, but it probably helps make Tabasco’s newer sauces hit closer to home. What’s most surprising is the use of guava and pineapple as the main accenting flavors. This gives Tabasco scorpion an interesting twist. But guess what? In short, Tabasco scorpion sauce has a heat level between 23,000-33,000 SHUs on the Scoville scale. This makes the sauce about 8-10x hotter than Tabasco’s Original sauce. If you’re concerned about salt-intake, careful here. Tabasco Scorpion has 190 mg of sodium, which is about 8% of your daily intake. Regular Tabasco is only 2%, so it’s a big difference. That said, you don’t really notice it tasting too salty over the intense heat here. Collectibility Tabasco also makes a habanero sauce that I think tastes even better than the scorpion sauce. It also has a lower Scoville level, making it more usable on a daily basis. Let’s start with the ingredient list as there are many big clues to how this hot sauce performs: Distilled vinegar, habanero pepper, cane sugar, TABASCO brand pepper sauce (distilled vinegar, red pepper, salt), salt, mango purée, dehydrated onion, banana purée, tomato paste, tamarind purée, papaya purée, spices, garlic, TABASCO pepper mash (aged pepper, salt).

Types of Hot Sauce

On the sodium-level: this isn’t a sauce for those looking to curb their sodium intake. Tabasco Habanero has 120 mg per teaspoon serving, which is 5% of your daily allowance. That’s very high compared to the brand’s Original Red (35 mg). Heat Balance Tabasco Scorpion is sort of a sauce within a sauce. The ingredients are: Scorpion peppers, distilled vinegar, sugar, guava puree, pineapple, salt, guava powder, pineapple powder, TABASCO® Brand Pepper Sauce (distilled vinegar, red pepper, salt). It’s also a great addition to any rice or potato by adding a peppery sweet heat that’s very different from original Tabasco. This is, of course, great on eggs (as Tabasco always is.) And it works great as a marinade too, you’ll just have to dash it out for quite a while due to the stopper, but dare I say, the Jamaican taste it will provide makes it worth all the arm soreness.
