About this deal

The auction closes at 9pm, Mon 5th July. However, if a bid is placed in the last two minutes, the auction end time will extend on that lot for an additional two minutes, or until all bidding has ceased. This is called Popcorn Bidding or Bidder Extension and gives all bidders an equal chance of winning. Bid Increments Because of this ‘Who Decides?’ was curated by service users from The Wallich, a charity which supports those who have experienced homelessness, out of a large selection of paintings, sculptures, films, prints and drawings acquired in the last 10 years by the National Museum of Cardiff and the Derek Williams Trust.

The exhibition does demonstrate the breath of fresh air that the Impressionists gave to smoky Victorian Britain with stunning work by Pissarro, who maintains a gentle balance between abstraction and observation, and the largest selection of Monet’s Houses of Parliament paintings to have been shown in Europe for the last 40 years. In the artist’s own words: “I draw from life as much as possible. In the studio, I reimagine and collage my drawings assembling a new relationship to spaces I visit. I am keen to keep the line searching and always expanding my vocabulary of mark making.(…) Many of the paintings on display are inhabited by figures that synchronise with nature’s deep rhythms.” One of the main focuses of the show is Modigliani’s nudes. 12 of these are on display together in this exhibition, making it the largest collection of his nudes ever to be collectively exhibited in the UK. In the 1910 as the art world was losing interest in the nude, Modigliani revived and enriched the subject. He found a way to present the body as a person, who was living, breathing and feeling— deep in sleep, thought or desire —without falling into the trap of appearing to be a distant voyeur or becoming a humiliating exhibitor of objectified flesh. The sensual nature of these nudes, in fact led to Modigliani’s only ever solo show being censored by the police for indecency.

The Martin Tinney Gallery, which was established in 1992, specialises in the work of Welsh and Wales-based artists and sells to both individuals and large public galleries. Their Winter Show is one of the most popular of the year and is made up mainly of drawings and paintings by Wale’s leading artists, both past and present. The works very in subject matter and style from the figurative to the abstract. It has the exciting element that once a work is sold it is immediately removed and replaced by an alternative piece, meaning that any two days at the exhibition might never be the same. Selected from almost 3,000 entries, Kathryn’s work will also be acquired by the Walker Art Gallery to join its world-class collection

Camille Pissarro, Charing Cross Bridge, London, French, 1830 – 1903, 1890, oil on canvas, Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon She graduated in 2011 with a degree in fine art printmaking from the University of Brighton, before undertaking The Drawing Year postgraduate programme at the Royal Drawing School in 2012–13. Maple has featured in exhibitions at numerous venues in London including Barber & Lopes at the British Art Fair; The Royal Academy; Beers London; Flowers Gallery; Frestonian Gallery; Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery; Albert Studios; and Drawing Room. Venues outside London include Christies New York and Messums Wiltshire. Maple was the winner of the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2014 and 2016, and the John Moores Painting Prize 2020. Her exhibition Under a Hot Sun at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 2023, was awarded to Maple as part of her prize for winning the latter. Maple is the only child of an architect father, who died when she was 11, and a retired shopkeeper mother. She thinks that, if the artistic side came from anywhere, it was from him: “I’ve been sent messages from family and friends saying he’d be so proud.” Although being outdoors is what primarily inspires her, she does enjoy other great painters of nature, such as Turner and his skies, and Van Gogh, particularly his orchard series and his ink drawings. Yet she really doesn’t present doing art as some great predestined thing, crediting instead a teacher who encouraged her at A-levels. After those, she studied printmaking at Brighton University, before getting to the Drawing School in 2013.

Focussing on the extreme environmental situation the world is currently facing, Kathryn’s exhibition Under a Hot Sun is a collection of work created following the artist’s success in the painting prize. This comprehensive retrospective is a chance to see a large amount of Modigliani’s work and understand the inspirational and pivotal effect his work has had on the art world since the 20th century. His style is instantly recognisable and has become a beloved symbol of emotionally engaged pictorial work. Kathryn Maple, said, “Under a Hot Sun is my first solo show, it is huge opportunity to show my paintings at the Walker Art Gallery. The Walker has a great permanent collection and I’m in the company of many artists who have inspired my practice. Kathryn will also show images from ‘A Year of Drawings’, a new book and exhibition for which Kathryn made a new drawing everyday between January and December 2022. The works will be shown at Lyndsey Ingram Gallery, London in March.

It also includes a private collection of Nash’s drawings, paintings, photographs and ephemera that have barely ever been shown in public and which offer a direct insight into the life of Paul Nash and his brother John.Kathryn Maple: Under a Hot Sun at the Walker Art Gallery Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions Editor Last Updated 1 February 2023 'Paper Hats' (oil on canvas) is part of Kathryn Maple’s collection to be displayed at Walker Art Gallery.
