About this deal

Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. Samsung is known more for its mobile phones than for its digital cameras, and their mobile phone (and tablet computer) user interfaces (UIs) are generally excellent. We also like how the My Screen tool allows you to customise the shooting screen with your most regularly used settings too. It never seems to matter what new device is introduced, there is always a chorus of negative comments about it.

With Samsung’s unique Gesture Shot, which uses motion-sensing technology, users can zoom and snap a photo with simple hand motions from across the room. On the flip side, a higher pixel count usually hurts performance at high ISOs, which seems to be the case here).Funny Face mode uses the MV800's face detection to find a subject's mug and then hilariously distort their features. If point and shoot's your thing, then you'll be delighted with the new Samsung NV800, which offers by far the most hand-holding features that we've ever seen on a compact camera, coupled with a great touchscreen that largely succeeds in mimicking a smartphone. Doubtless Samsung is trying to make the transition easier for anyone upgrading from one of its smartphone handsets who conceivably might already own such a miniscule card, but there is certainly space here for a full sized SD/SDHC/SDXC slot to have been provided alongside the battery at the camera's base instead. It uses so much destructive noise reduction that it's difficult to see what the photo was supposed to be in the first place.

The Samsung MV800 has 3 different image quality settings available, with SuperFine being the highest quality option.Fujifilm's newest camera aims to bring modern AF, improved sensor stabilization and video recording technology into the medium format realm. And that's not even mentioning the unique and very useful flip-out display which makes it easy to take a self-portrait and shoot from more obscure angles.

The built-in Image Stabilisation does an effective job of keeping blur to a minimum at longer telephoto settings and slower shutter speeds too. The crops below back up that assessment for the most part, but do look a bit softer than what we'd expect from a camera that earned such a high sharpness score. or higher / Windows XP / Vista / 7, 512MB (Min) RAM (1GB or more Recommended) / 250MB of available Hard Disk Space (1GB or more Recommended) / USB Port / CD-ROM Drive / 1024 x 768P / 16bit Colour Display Compatible Monitor (24bit Color Display Recommended) / Microsoft Direct X 9. Amy is currently the Features Editor at Amateur Photographer magazine, and in her increasingly little spare time works across a number of high-profile publications including Wired, Stuff, Digital Camera World, Expert Reviews, and just a little off-tangent, PetsRadar. But the MV800 is aimed squarely at casual users, the types of folks who have an iPod Touch but haven't heard of the Nikon D40.I've been waiting for a compact digital camera from Samsung that incorporates a flip or articulated type screen, and a removable battery. Well, now’s your chance), a make-your-own My Photo Frame mode (oh, the possibilities…), and a Funny Face mode that’s funny because it’s so rubbish rather than funny because the effects are funny. It can get a little bit overwhelming at first, with no less than 32 modes, effects and options on offer, but spend a little time exploring and you'll soon find your favourites. The Samsung MV800 handled chromatic aberrations fairly well during the review, with some purple fringing present around the edges of objects in high-contrast situations, as shown in the examples below. Similarly, whilst by far from the worst low light performance we've seen, and a broader than expected light sensitivity range selectable from ISO 80 up to maximum ISO 3200, images do start to noticeably deteriorate and lose detail after ISO 400, meaning that at ISO 800 noise and softness are present in equal measure.
