Following my recent MOT on my 2003 325i Touring, my mechanic told me that the exhaust mountings need attention.
It also provides a good strong connection between the different parts of an exhaust section, such as the Manifold, turbo joints, down pipes, front sections, exhaust flexi sections, middle exhaust silencers and exhaust rear back boxes. If/when this happens, the car will usually throw a CEL, owing to the upstream/downstream O2 sensors seeing the cat converter not performing as expected, owing to the gasses passing around the outside. The exhaust flanges are manufactured from poor quality steel that will rust and corrode and eventually disintegrate, causing an exhaust leak. You can rest assure that the components that you fit to your car have been manufactured to the highest standards.Upon inspection you will be able to see the flanges are rusted and corroded and often split or starting to.
The heads of the studs on mine were welded to the cat flanges- from the quality of the weld, I'd say it was factory, as it was VERY clean. As above, I cut the remaining 2 studs off, drilled with several carbide bits, and used M8 bolts to replace them.
