About this deal

Johnnie Walker is introducing a new line of Blue Label expressions featuring whiskies from lost distilleries. Glenury Royal was closed in 1985 during the 'whisky loch', a crisis caused by the gross over-estimation of demand in the 1970s. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal has been carefully crafted by Master Blender Jim Beveridge and his small team of expert whisky makers using eight handpicked whiskies from the four corners of Scotland, including three irreplaceable “ghost” whiskies.

Jim Beveridge used malts from Pittyvaich, Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, and Glenkinchie, as well as grains from Cambus and Cameronbridge to build out the expression. His blends were very popular at the time, but it wasn’t until his death in 1857, when the company was inherited by Alexander Walker, that the brand really took off. Blue label is an aged whisky with a beautiful, complex flavour, and red label has sweeter flavours of butterscotch and vanilla. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Pittyvaich has an exceptional single malt from the 'ghost' distillery of Pittyvaich at its heart. At the heart of this limited-edition whisky lies the Highland single malt, Glenury Royal -a ‘ghost’ distillery that shut its doors in 1985 after a long and colourful history. It was in 1908 that the Johnnie Walker name was first put on bottles, after the Managing Director, James Stevenson, rebranded the range. Whisky offers a unique, world-class blend of Scottish Lowland single malts with a natural cask strength of 50. The first batch has been built around single malt whisky from Brora, which closed in 1983, but which will reopen by 2020. In the past 23 years there has only been eight official bottlings of Glenury Royal – making this limited edition release a rare chance to experience the rare flavour of this legendary whisky.

Each release offer a fleeting opportunity to savour the depth of character of whiskies from 'ghost' distilleries that have long since closed, but whose spirit still lives on in the precious liquid captured in every bottle.Other very rare whiskies from Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie reveal notes of spiced apples alongside Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk, bringing aromas of peaches and berries. Johnnie Walker’s Ghost and Rare series has brought some long lost names back into the public eye, and this time it’s the turn of Glenury Royal to be thrust into the limelight. This indulgent new limited edition provides us with a wonderful opportunity to explore the remarkable layers of rich fruit found in every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

Alexander, with his son Alexander Walker II, firmly established the business and began marketing Walker’s Old Highland - a blended Scotch whisky - in 1865. Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Pittyvaich was released in 2021 as part of the continuing Ghost and Rare series celebrating the rare and lost distilleries that contribute to the Johnnie Walker brand's globe-bestriding success. At the heart of this blend lies the highly sought-after whisky from the legendary Highland “ghost” distillery of Glenury Royal, a hidden treasure of the whisky world, which closed its doors in 1985.They mixed whiskies from five famous regions in Scotland—Islay, Speyside, Campbeltown, Highlands, and Lowlands. In the event of any safety concerns or for any other information about a product please carefully read any instructions provided on the label or packaging and contact the manufacturer. Inspired by the enigmatic and alluring umami flavour profile, they've masterfully handpicked whiskies, fusing salty, smoky, and savoury notes to achieve the perfect umami experience.
