Rising sea levels could be dealt with too, by building dikes along the seaboards and writing off Miami Beach. His rehabilitation took him into an often surprising landscape of a very human kind of hacking, and he wondered - are all humans becoming hybrids?

Detecting hybridization between Iranian wild wolf ( Canis lupus pallipes) and free-ranging domestic dog ( Canis familiaris) by analysis of microsatellite markers. Recent revelations about interbreeding between what some regard as separate species of ancient humans have left many of us wondering: who are “we”, who are “they” and are we actually all one and the same? While this scientific advance offers the prospect of growing human organs inside animals for use in transplants, it can also leave some people with a queasy feeling.Through the Human Capital and Genoeconomics (HCG) survey supported by China Agricultural University, we recently collected a sample of Chinese individuals that contains both standard demographic/social/economic characteristics and individual-level genotyping data. Our findings indicate some correspondence between these different lines of evidence, flag individual fossils as possibly admixed, and suggest that different cranial regions may preserve hybridization signals differentially. Interestingly, the effects of heterosis uncovered by this study were stronger in males than in females. In 1967, they came close to creating a human-chimpanzee hybrid—and if the experiment hadn’t been shut down early, they would have succeeded.

TheBookOfPhobiaaAndManias traces the rich and thought-provoking history in which our fixations have taken shape. In this project, they used a small enough number of cells that it didn’t affect their behavior in a major way. The results lent strong support to the team’s prediction that heterosis exists in humans and can cause real differences in characteristics, including height and educational achievement.
