About this deal

If you’ve used both to clean your paintbrushes or thin down paint before, you will know that there isn’t much difference. All types of white paint can turn yellow, depending on the room’s environment. For instance, if you expose the paint to grease or moisture, it will turn yellow regardless of the type or brand of the paint. Eggshell - eggshell is perfect for a slightly higher sheen than matt with added durability that comes with more sheen

If you spill drink or grease over paint and don’t wipe it off immediately, the colorants in the grease will stain the paint and make it yellow. It feels as though Johnstone’s Aqua gloss has much more oil in it than Teknos Futura 90. You cannot simply wash a brush out with clean water, as you would with other systems. Instead, you should start off with water, then finish washing out with a product called Clean Spirit. Just put your brushes in the container and add some white spirit to it; you really don’t need much.

You can sand the yellowing tint off the white paint using 400-grit sandpaper. The sanding will scrub the paint and remove the tint over it. However, this works only for dried yellow stains or spots.

Yes, of course. As we said above, white spirit and methylated spirit are used interchangeably in the painting and decorating world. Although some pros have a favourite, that is just a personal preference. Excellent UV durability (good for exterior timber) (better resistance against chalking and colour fade) Water-based or hybrid gloss products are a bit different. You need a synthetic brush, capable of holding its shape for prolonged periods. There is no point opting for an overly soft bristles either, or you will struggle. I’d suggest the Hamilton Prestige Synthetic Brush, which gives you everything you need at a reasonable price. Available online here. The term waterproof is often banded around when it comes to paints. Oil-based gloss paints are what many people would consider waterproof, as they offer some protection against water, which is why they can be used externally. Having said this, the term waterproof when it comes to paints should usually only be used if they repel water, which standard oil-based gloss paints do not. Q. Can you use oil-based gloss over water-based undercoat?

Advantages of Porcelain White

Pet Urine– The high amount of ammonia in the pet’s urine can stain white paint and give it a yellowish tint. It is crucial when explaining what eggshell paint is to put it into context. Paint comes in a range of finishes that vary in terms of their 'sheen', otherwise known as the amount of light they reflect. The more sheen a paint has, the more durable it is. This is why gloss and satin is often used on woodwork and metal as these areas are prone to scuffs, while lower sheen paints are used on interior walls & ceilings. These finishes include matt, eggshell, silk, soft sheen, satin & gloss. Traditionally oil-based paints were favoured for woodwork and other parts of interior and exterior trim, although today many opt for water-based paints as the technology has caught up with the quality of oil-based paints in recent years. Oil-based gloss paints can take between 6 – 16 hours to dry and are usually ready to recoat in 24 hours. This is in contrast with water-based gloss paints that take between 1 - 2 hours to dry. Q. How many coats of gloss are required? When it comes to an acrylic water-based eggshell, we would highly recommend Macpherson Acrylic Eggshell. It is a high-quality, durable emulsion paint that is suitable for internal wood and metal, as well any interior wall or ceiling. It has an excellent coverage of up to 15m2 per litre and achieves a beautiful finish that is wipeable and will not yellow.

Flow - many decorators prefer working with an oil-based paint as they can offer a better flow on the paint brush, which leads to a neater finish Williamsburg Porcelain White is based on a new pigment (for Williamsburg), PW 5, it is a complex co-precipitate of barium sulfate and zinc sulfide more commonly known as Lithopone. For such a great paint, it’s disappointing that it doesn’t come in any colours other than the standard pure brilliant white. But the elegant, soft mid-sheen and almost velvety-looking finish make it perfect for any home. It’s oil-based, so brushes will need to be cleaned with brush cleaner, and as with all oil-based paints, you should also make sure you keep the area well ventilated while painting and drying. After it’s fully dry, any future scuff marks or stains can be cleaned off without damaging the paint, making it perfect for high-traffic areas. It’s funny, a few years ago, Johnstone’s Aqua was widely regarded as the best white water-based gloss paint available. However, comparing it to the more modern Teknos Futura 90 just outlines its flaws. It is still good, but it’s harder to apply, can damage your brushes and turns yellow after a couple of years. It takes significantly longer than water-based paints to dry. The label on the can will tell you exactly how long you should wait between coats, but expect it to take between eight to 16 hours. Lisa adds, “This also means that the space has to be kept dust-free overnight (versus an hour or two) until the paint has fully dried so particles aren’t settling on the wet surfaces.” The Porcelain White felt quite stiff when used straight out of the tube, it needed some handling to start moving smoothly and held marks to a reasonable extent. It became quite translucent when mixed with a solvent. Eggshell paints are closer in sheen to satinwood, but are a little more matte. Again, these are better suited to walls and ceilings as they aren’t as durable as satinwood. What do I need to consider when choosing a satinwood paint? Wrong Cleaners – If you use the wrong cleaner to clean your paint, the coating will have a yellow time over time. Petroleum-based solvents (mineral spirits) and turpentine will cause a yellowish tint on the paint. It can be mixed in almost any colour thanks to the Painters World paint mixing service. This includes RAL, British Standard, NCS and Macpherson colours, as well as equivalent shades of almost all major paint manufacturers.
