About this deal

Before unplugging the Zoom H8 from your computer, you’ll first need to “disconnect it” within the Audio Interface settings of the device. To do this, all you need to do is tap the cog (Settings)icon, tap Select, and then press Execute. Once complete, you can then disconnect from your computer or iOS device. A higher ohm rated headphone may also work well with the device, but would not be able to be driven as well by the output and may encounter volume issues.

H8 - ZOOM

The R07 is a great option for ‘Run & Gun’ videographers looking to capture improved sound for their productions. The small unit includes built-in stereo microphones and a port to plug in a lav mic: perfect when someone's presenting to camera. If necessary, update the recording format by taping the Paper icon (located next to the microphone icon) There's no fancy Bluetooth app, and it won’t help you tune your guitar. Instead, every effort has gone into making sure the PCM D-100 captures the best recording possible, whatever the location or the conditions. Preamp circuitry is isolated from its power supply for reduced noise, and levels can be set for each mic. These can be positioned independently too, swiveling 90 through 120 degrees. The H8 is a powerful USB audio interface. Connect via USB to your PC, Mac, iPad or tablet for up to 12 channels of simultaneous recording. You can monitor level meters and hit REC,PLAY, and STOP in each H8 application mode. Just insert the BTA-1 to your H8 and connect to your iOS device. The H8 Control App is freely available from App Store. Different inputs: Look out for multiple inputs as this will allow you to mix up the microphones you use; from lav mics when presenting to XLR inputs for boom mics and shotgun mics to record ambient sound. This means that these effects in the Music app are inappropriate and non-standard for proper video productions, as explained in 48kHzAlliance.com. This might be a dealbreaker for some producers who need to create in 48 kHz and want to do effects within the H8, but not for those who add effects using a separate app on a computer (which is what I do).

Monitoring is via the internal mono speaker unless headphones are plugged in, the volume of either being controlled by a virtual slider accessed at the top of each app’s home screen. The maximum headphone volume is pretty good with low‑impedance phones, but there’s only the one output. While that might be fine for field and music recording, it’s rather restricting for podcasting, since the guests won’t be able to hear any stings or effects played in, even if they can hear each other acoustically. Yes, a headphone splitter or standalone amp could be used, of course, but its more boxes, wires and inconvenience. The PODCAST App makes high-production quality simple. With dedicated Sound Pads, use the touch screen to trigger sound effects, music beds and more. Choose from 13 high quality sounds or load your own via an SD card. Fortunately, the preamps in the H8 have been improved to be cleaner than the earlier H6 model (which obviously makes it even better than the preamps in the H5 which I used to own). My understanding is that the actual gain in the H8’s internal preamps is the same +55.5 dB as the H6 but (unlike the H5 or H6) without the hiss at maximum amplification. Although I don’t own a Shure SM7b (the most gain-hungry dynamic microphone I know), my colleague Curtis Judd tested the H8 with an SM7B in his review and he found it to be clean at maximum gain with a more than healthy level. In my own test you’ll hear ahead, I used a new studio dynamic microphone (to be reviewed separately). (Curtiss Judd has been my guest twice so far on BeyondPodcasting.) mm stereo TRS unbalanced headphone output with adjustable output volume via the touchscreen. (Although there is no physical knob for headphone volume, after you plug in your headphones, access is almost always available in the upper right corner of the touchscreen.) They will vary greatly according to use conditions. I call it bulletproof since it solves the issue discussed in my 2015 article TS/TRS/TRRS/TRRRS: Combating the misconnection epidemic (illustrated above). USB Micro-B(audio interface, mass storage and Guitar Lab connection functions)Note: Use a USB cable that supports data transfer.Operation using USB bus power is possible.
