In most cases, baby congestion caused by respiratory tract infections can be treated at home with simple remedies that help alleviate symptoms and gradually move the virus out of the body. Although most colds go away in about five to seven days for children, it could take up to two weeks for newborns and younger babies. Baby Congestion Symptoms Wash the bulb syringe in warm, soapy water after each use. Squeeze soapy water into the bulb and shake to clean out the mucus. Then, squeeze the water out. Foul odor: Infections are usually accompanied by odor. If there’s a foul odor, whether it’s coming from the ears, the mouth, or the nose, there’s likely an infection behind it. If your baby’s cough doesn’t accompany other symptoms or sounds dry or irritated, they most likely don’t have chest congestion. Dry coughs are often characteristic of conditions like whooping cough, which can produce a ‘whoop’ sound when gasping for breath between coughs. Just like with the bulb syringe, you can use a nasal aspirator with or without nasal drops (that will depend on the consistency of the mucus). And even if you don’t have a humidifier, you can run a hot shower to produce steam and sit in the bathroom with your child for a few minutes. You can do this several times a day.
