( December 2013) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) After the Ottoman army captured Constantinople in 1453, the empire began to expand rapidly. Taking over Greece, the Balkans, as well as the Middle East and the coast of North Africa. While the Ottoman empire could be brutal at times, it was also quite good at allowing different cultures within the Empire to express themselves. This will become relevant later.

A (Brief) History of Turkey

During the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire began to slowly crumble. With Greece and other countries rising and declaring independence. WW1 was the last throw of the dice for the Ottomans, aligning themselves with the Axis armies. After losing the war, the Ottoman empire was greatly reduced as land was ceded to the Greeks, Italians, French, and the British. This did not last long, with the people rising up in 1922 and declaring Turkish independence. This spelt the end of the Ottoman empire and in 1923 Turkey became an internationally recognised country. In addition to the Efes product range, the company offers a wide variety of local brands with different tastes and appeal. These include Stary Melnik, Bely Medved, Gold Mine Beer, Sokol, Krasny Vostok, Vostochnaya Bavaria, Zhigulevskoe, Polniy Nokaut, Green Beer, Dolce Iris, Sib-Beer, Yantarnoe, Solodov, Ershistoe, Barkhatnoe, Bogemskoe svetloe, Ak Bars, in Russia; Karagandinskaya in Kazakhstan; Chisinau, Vitanta Premium Classic in Moldova; Weifert, Weifert Belo, Pils Plus, Zajecarsko Pivo and Standard in Serbia & Montenegro. [1] Such local brands continue to contribute to the company's international revenue stream. Shelf life of Efes Beer in Draft Bottle is less than other beers due to a shorter level of pasteurization. this gives an aromatic, flavoursome and smooth drinking to Efes Draft beer in a bottle. Special production gives Efes Draft Beer its taste guarantee. Anadolu Efes Biracılık ve Malt Sanayii A.Ş. (lit. Anadolu Efes Brewery and Malt Industries) produces and markets beer and malt and non-alcoholic beverages in a wide geographical area comprising Turkey, Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Anadolu Efes is a member of the Anadolu Group. Anadolu Group was founded in 1950 by the Özilhan and Yazıcı families. Exhibiting a rapid and sustainable growth since its inception, the Anadolu Group transformed into a holding company in 1969. This virtual-monopoly by Efes looks set to last for quite some time yet, but there are signs of change. The rise of craft beer in Turkey has only just started, with only a handful of craft breweries and brewpubs. But they are a great sign, and the movement even seems to be supported by Efes (who sponsored a Craft beer festival). I don’t think that craft beer will make a huge change, but even Efes admits that competition could be good for business.

Unlike regular lagers, EFES Draft undergoes a shorter pasteurization process, resulting in a fresher and more vibrant flavour profile. While this grants it a shorter shelf life, its taste remains unparalleled!Efes is brewed by Anadolu Efes Biracılık ve Malt Sanayii A.Ş (Anadolu Efes for short) and was established in 1966. At about the same time the Türk Tuborg was granted permission to open their brewery. It did not take long for Efes to effectively become the number one brand in Turkey. In the 1980s they led a successful television advertising campaign, just before Turkey banned beer adverts. This helped it to stand out, it also benefited from intelligent sponsorship of sporting teams, and targeting the tourist market. Crafted with care by Anadolu Efes, a renowned Turkish brewery, Efes Draft Beer undergoes a special semi-pasteurization process that ensures a fresh, just-brewed flavour that you won't find in regular lagers. The shorter pasteurization also contributes to a shorter shelf life, but don't worry, this beer's taste is so delightful that it won't stay in your fridge for too long.

Until 2016, Turkey had never had a beer festival. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, you have to remember that Turkey is primarily a Muslim country. While it does allow alcohol (obviously), for many Turks, alcohol is taboo. Celebrating beer may have been seen as a step too far. You should always read the label before consuming or using the product and never rely solely on the information presented here. In addition to its flagship Pilsener, Efes also produces several other beers, including Efes Draft, semi-pasteurised for a fresh, just brewed flavour with a 6 month shelf life, Efes Dark, double-roasted malt lager with 6.5% alcohol and hints of caramel, Efes Light, a 3.0% ABV take on the original, Efes Extra, a hoppier, 7.5% ABV lager, Efes Ice, a softer, more aromatic, ice-brewed version with 4.2% alcohol, and Efes Dark Brown, a 6.1% ABV double-roasted malt lager with a distinct coffee and chocolate bouquet. Definitely buying this again. The hops are totally amazing, and it has a refreshing, natural malty flavour. This doesn't taste over pasteurized like a commercial pilsner (Heineken etc). It tastes natural and like the producers care about their product. The bottle is by far the coolest thing about this beer. It’s just Efes Pilsen that has been semi-pasteurised to remain “fresh”. Regular bottles of Efes Pilsen are fully pasteurised, meaning that they last longer but won’t taste as good. Sadly, the only time I had an Efes Draft was when fellow Beer N Biceps Podcaster Todd had an old bottle in his fridge. So I can’t say it was too fresh! Craft Beer in Turkey
