About this deal

I am mostly a "Technic" guy but I will get this (eventually), just like I will soon get Pirates of Barracuda Bay. The interior is well detailed with the addition of two generous chairs based on a 3×3 plate rather than the more common 2×2 size. You won’t fly through the build, either – not because it’s incredibly complex, save for those fiddly, less structurally sound moments, but because you’ll enjoy savouring every step in what’s a real rarity of a LEGO set.

LEGO doesn’t even shortcut the far wall where the timber storage would be, still squeezing in a window to the outside world. They're not really big enough for more than a welcome mat, and the hair is probably tough and bristly. We also add a gabled window to one side and a chimney that extends through the roof on the other side.

Due to her wearing green garb and being an archer, I get the feeling she might be aligned to the Forestmen, which were usually presented as enemies of the Black Falcons. However, the same part in Reddish Brown would have been the absolutely perfect part to give the gable ends a perfectly smooth shape. Thankfully, the characters that are in the box are all incredibly well-designed: the blacksmith’s double-sided head communicates so much through just his eyes and brows, the rest being covered by his big, bushy beard; the archer’s squint has her ready to loose arrows into the apple tree’s target; and Classic Castle fans will find a lot to love where the knights are concerned, because they’re bringing the ‘80s back in style.

This is a fun, cute set that would be right at home in a bustling medieval town and I would very much like to have a copy. As part of the 900th anniversary of Reading Abbey, we have commissioned a series of videos demonstrating how blacksmiths would have worked for and around Reading Abbey.

Both turkeys and pumpkins are New World fauna and flora, respectively, and thus would not have been found in Europe during the actual Middle Ages. But if I vote for a fan design, then I also expect that it comes close to this and not that the marketing department prevails. The roofline is not straight, but rather have a slight bend to the roof which is achieved using towball joints. The Blacksmith house is a beautiful build to behold on the exterior, showcasing detailed stoneworks around the arches and doorways. And then there are the small touches that really bring the set to life: the bellows that trigger the light brick in the blacksmith’s forge; the well, squash garden and foliage that present just a hint at the surrounding landscape; and the knights travelling by wagon to collect their supplies. All that said, your opinion of 21325 Medieval Blacksmith may end up resting largely on how much you enjoyed Clemens Fiedler’s design – particularly as you reach the final bags and begin assembling the roof. Just like the normal undercrofts that existed back in the day, and the forge even has the opening for the heat to transcend up and out of the chimney.

The perfectly placed roof with almost imperceivable shutlines around the dormer window and chimney stack impressed me on the forge side, while the simplicity of access on the alternate side revealed another reason for the moss covered roof - it enables an extra layer of plates to be added (or more importantly, hidden) that help larger fingers prise that roof off! The Blacksmith was once at the heart of the community, I invite you to put this set at the heart of your LEGO collection, I honestly don't think you'll .And each row of roof shingles was formed from an identical hinged segment with two uneven layers of plates and tiles added on top (unlike a real slate roof, which layers higher rows of shingles on top of lower ones, not next to them). As much as I loved Pirates of Barracuda Bay, this one has got it and every other recent set beat, to me at least. Medieval Blacksmith is packed with the kind of detail and techniques that are representative of the LEGO Group’s very best models, and even where they feel tried and tested – like in the tiles that connect to bricks with side studs on the chimney – it’s still refreshing to see them finally applied to a castle-themed set.
