About this deal

A mother held her new baby and very slowly rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch | Goodreads Love You Forever by Robert Munsch | Goodreads

This is the only children's book I've ever read that stuck me as more depressing than "The Giving Tree". It is important for the children to realize that death is a part of the circle of life; it is not always something dark and something to be feared but rather, if happening in a timely fashion, something that one can embrace. I realize that the mother sneaking into her grown son's house via a ladder is supposed to be kind of funny (at least I hope it is), but it is still creepy and weird! In Love You Forever Munsch uses words like “crazy” and “zoo” to add the effect of comedy but the overall theme of the story strikes chords that are much deeper than exaggerated expressions (Munsch np).Yes, the mother is saying "she'll love him forever", but what child with reasonably attentive parents doesn't already know that?

She opened the door to his room, crawled across the floor, looked up over the side of his bed; and if he was really asleep she picked him up and rocked him back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Empty Nest: Even after the boy grows up and moves out, his mother will sometimes sneak into his house to hold him and sing the song. When we jump from 9 to the teen years is where it is clear she has no respect for boundaries at all. Some of the books on this site may contain characterizations or illustrations that are culturally insensitive or inaccurate. When the man becomes a father, he shows his love for his daughter by singing the same song his mother sang to him. This books shows that through good times and bad and has such a sweet, tender ending that should touch everyone's heart. Yet, despite the mothers obvious irritation she continually crawls into the boys room every night to pick him up and rock him back and forth while she sings “ I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be” (Munsch np). She is on her hands and knees and peekingaround the corner with her head almost all the way upside down like some kind of horror movie ghost. As a person matures from adolescence to adulthood, they begin to understand the importance of displaying affection and reciprocating love.
