This review was for the original Echo Meter Touch, which has been improved on for the Echo Meter Touch 2, which is slightly better and much more affordable than the original. Now, every bat enthusiast can use their Android device to discover, identify and study all the bats in their area. They can listen, record, and share. They even get the same automatic species ID features as the pros. It's fun, educational, and now – very affordable. The following, are conclusions which I've reached, after using The Echo Meter Touch (with iPad mini Retina) for almost a month now. For a hand-held unit with pretty much everything you could want, the Echo Meter Touch 2 is hard to beat and excellent value for money. Even if you add the price of an Android tablet, the total price is probably less than you think (see below). A series of sharp, descending chirps, repeated in clusters. Someone was preparing to exit the box! I hit the manual recording button (which starts recording 5 seconds in the past so you don’t miss anything) and looked up. The chirps became louder and faster and then, right before my eyes, a bat descended from the box and swooped up over my head into the gloomy dusk. Woo hoo! The updated Echo Meter Touch app for Android features pro-only options including adjustable gain and advanced trigger settings – and of course, the latest Kaleidoscope Pro auto-ID classifiers for bats species in North America, the UK, Europe, the Neotropics and South Africa.

Why? Because you are simply getting the absolute most-for-your-money in the case of an EM Touch. It is the obvious choice, in it's price range. Overall, there is nothing extra about this detector. It looks kinda boring, but if you’re looking for a lightweight app for your Android device to identify bats around, this one is a nice choice. Just start recording and the app will detect all kinds of ultrasounds on the spectrogram.This is a combination of a Ultrasonic microphone that plugs into your phone or tablet, and software that you install. With this you can listen to, record and view ultrasonic echolocation calls on a colorful, interactive spectrogram. The software can even suggest the most likely species detected.
Wildlife Acoustics is a big name in the world of wildlife audio research and they’ve built some of the most advanced wildlife sound identification software available. One of Wildlife Acoustics software products is called Kaleidoscope Pro Bat Auto ID. They’ve developed classifiers for 38 bat species in North America, which covers almost every species you’re likely to hear. But they’re also constantly adding to their list of classifiers for other regions of the world. At the time of writing they created classifiers for 37 species in the UK & Europe, 37 Neotropical species, and 21 in South Africa. You can see a complete list of species here. The SSF Bat2 is a new generation of super-heterodyne detector that is set to become the detector of choice for watching bats. In addition to its heterodyne function, the SSF Bat2 also uses frequency division to monitor all frequencies. With the option to input pre-set frequencies, you can jump between frequencies and greatly minimise the chance of missing bats.
