I still maintain – all these years later – that Nordic Games’ We Sing Pop, released in 2012, was the epitomy of the genre, capturing the mix of songs, controls and gameplay perfectly… Well now We Sing Pop is back, available on current-gen consoles from THQ Nordic.
When it comes to variety, We Sing Pop takes the lead, as it features more “older” tracks mixed into the song selection – including tracks by Queen, Abba, The B-52’s and Wham! It features songs by Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, Lana Del Rey, Flo Rida, Bruno Mars, Avril Lavigne, and LMFAO. Yes, back in January we reviewed Ravens Court’s Now… Sing sequel alongside Ubisoft’s Just Sing and Nordic Games’ (under their new THQ Nordic banner) We Sing, the franchise that was – in my opinion – the KING of the karaoke games during the Nintendo Wii era. But while the tracklist is new, the same can’t be said for the game’s modes – which are identical to the 2022 edition we reviewed last year. King we see some familiar faces – Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix make an appearance, as well as a few clips from the film by the same name.
The game once again fills out its 30 included tracks with a mix of pop, 80s and 90s classics, only this time we’ve also got a dash of fun, feel-good, much-requested Karaoke tracks like Stand By Me and Kung Fu Fighting*. It includes tracks by Queen like " Bicycle Race", " We Will Rock You", " Another One Bites the Dust", " I Want to Break Free", and " We Are the Champions".Also like its predecessor, you’ll get a music video accompaniment to keep anyone watching enjoying themselves, even if they aren’t behind the microphone. It ended up working way better than I could have predicted, though I’m pretty sure using a mic would have still been the optimal way to play this game. And so, as is our wont, here’s our head-to-head breakdown of both games, in hopes of crowning the new King of Karaoke [Games].
