About this deal

We know how it is. Even with all the expert advice in the world, there is still a daunting amount of choice when it comes to selecting your new ethernet cable. To make things even easier for you, the expert team at The Wifi Specialist has compiled a list of our favourite ethernet cables for a variety of categories and purposes. When you are looking to buy new ethernet cables, the first important task is to figure out which one you need. Since there are many ethernet cables, you need to be able to tell which one is which. Also, getting the wrong ethernet cable will potentially sabotage your efforts to establish a flawless LAN network. This isn’t to say you should go out and buy some Cat8 cable to run outside, though, as the cold weather can affect ethernet cables, especially those that are not designed for outdoor use and should be reserved for use indoors. An outdoor ethernet cable can connect the outbuilding directly to the router inside a house. The connection will terminate inside the garden building and can be connected to an access point to provide a separate wireless network. In addition to the long run as a tech writer and editor, Jason spent over a decade as a college instructor doing his best to teach a generation of English students that there's more to success than putting your pants on one leg at a time and writing five-paragraph essays. While his days of steering students toward greatness are behind him, his lifelong desire to delight, entertain, and inform lives on in his work at How-To Geek.

Installing a wired internet connection into a garden building can be daunting if you are not familiar with networking. Thankfully, the installation is fairly simple and can be completed within a few hours. A question that often comes up is “should I use only shielded cable outside”? The short answer is no. The longer answer is “it depends on the environment”. The purpose of cable shielding is to ward off EMI/RFI or ESD. The shielding, usually in the form of foil referred to as FTP (Foil Twisted Pair), will be accompanied by a ESD ground/drain wire as well. Generally, I recommend using unshielded cabling unless there is a valid need for shielded, such as when burying the cable within 8” of electrical wire on parallel runs. The other primary reason to use shielded is for ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) drain off such as when running outdoor Ethernet cable above ground in structure-to-structure scenarios. ESD build up occurs with dry air movement across cabling, and could ruin your network equipment if not allowed to discharge to ground. Is it better to put direct burial outdoor cable into conduit or just bury it directly in the ground? Category 8 ethernet cables are the fastest and most reliable cables available. The speeds of Cat8 cables are so high that many users cannot use them at their maximum potential. However, the Dacrown Cat8 cable is the best-reviewed Cat8 cable on the market and its reasonable price allows this cable to bring 40 Gbps speeds to the general user. Both cable types have their pros and cons. One is not necessarily better than another, depending on what you are doing. Rather than go over the relative pros and cons of each here, see Direct Burial Ethernet Cable: Gel Filled vs. Waterproof Tape .For some added protection from the elements, you should also install a weatherproof outdoor box on the outside of your premises. This will protect your ethernet cable and will further prevent the elements from entering your home or business. If you already have a waterproof box on the outside of your home, you can use your existing hub for convenience. Step 3: Bury The Cable

Wired internet connections are widely used in commercial environments, but less common at home. There are many benefits of using an ethernet cable including a reliable performance at a range of up to 100m and eliminating buffering on connected devices. One less obvious thing to consider is what sort of cable construction you want. Most Ethernet cable consists of stranded, shielded wires inside a flexible plastic casing, which is easy to wind up and move around. However, solid-core cable is less susceptible to interference and offers slightly better performance. It’s less flexible, but if you’re running cable inside a wall it’s a good choice.A Cat6 patch lead or cable, also known as a straight-through cable, is used for connecting devices of different types, like a computer to a switch or hub. StarTech doesn’t make the cheapest cables, but they are rigorously tested and have a reputation for reliability. This Cat6 cable comes in blue, white or grey in lengths that cover everything from short patch cables to longer 15m runs. It uses 100% stranded copper conductors with 50-micron gold-plated connectors, and the cables are tested with the industry-standard Fluke tests to ensure they deliver reliable, professional-grade performance. If you are determined to use conduit, IMC metal conduit will be more durable, but costly. IMC metal conduit is used for plumbing and has threads that can be thoroughly sealed. It is wise to pull twine/string through the conduit with the cable and leave it in place to make cable replacements easier. If you live in a particular cold part of the world, a valid concern you may is whether the cold weather can affect ethernet cable; even those that are exterior-grade and designed specifically for outdoor use.
