About this deal

Tactics and Final Verdict on the Soulblight Gravelords Army Overview of the Soulblight Gravelords Army Ivya roams the realms alone, hunting hulking behemoths with the help of her beloved woodsman’s axe and her loyal swarm of needle-fanged bats. Battletome: Soulblight Gravelords Add a little more finesse to your slaughter with the Sybarite Blade-Carnival, which collects a cavalcade of elite Slaanesh Mortals in one place. When these peerless warriors aren’t preening, they’re a surgical strike force comprising 30 miniatures – perfect for tearing reality in two and summoning gaggles of Daemonettes. On the other side, the Deadwalkers are much more synergistic. The Dire Wolves are excellent chaff unit (units that you can sacrifice and use to delay enemies from getting where they can hurt you or force them to act against that unit instead of others). For example, are you afraid of Unleash Hell? Charge a unit of Dire Wolves into the shooting unit and let them decide if they want to spend a command point to blast off the wolves or take the charge and stop their only charge to shoot a charging unit. But are they a good value? We’re going to break down each box by its components if bought separately.

You could use this unit to extend the aura of Legion of Blood’s Immortal Majesty, making more models run when near a Vampire. Which is kinda odd, really, changing the dynasty and heritage of unique named characters, but rules as written they’re in any dynasty or legion you so choose. At 200 points though, I don’t think even the spell or dynastic flexibility makes the unit worth it. The 60 point ‘Warhammer Underworlds warband tax’ strikes again! Battleline Nagash does return however he took another points hike pushing him up to 975 pts. His warscroll is identical to the Ossiarch Bonereapers one, although a special rule allows him to gain the Soulblight Gravelords keyword, and he does know all 13 spells in the disciple. Is this worth a 95 point price hike? Probably not. He was already suffering as it stood and I’m not sure if all those spells are worth it. It may depend if everything goes up in price in 3rd edition Age of Sigmar, similar to how the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 worked. Savings wise, we’re once again looking at last year where we had anything from 25% – 37% in savings for these boxes versus buying the units individually at retail. That’s Nothing to sniff at! First up are the vampires of the Soulblight Gravelords, who lead a dolorous horde of brainless thralls in a bumper box which contains 66 miniatures. Hordes of Deadwalker Zombies are particularly useful for pinning down enemy forces while the Vengorian Lord and their Blood Knights swoop in for the jugular. Deintalos the Exile and the Exiled Dead are a group of zombies with a vampire at their head, a ward of 5+ and little more. It’s a grave situation, but this is a great time to be a fan(g) of all things undead… Alright, enough with the puns and on to the reveals. Mortisan Ossifector Overall, good changes. The old book’s spell list held up surprisingly well and keeping them intact was a good call. It’s helped further by Nagash knowing all 13 spells and given he can cast 8 spells a turn at full health, that is a lot of versatility. Bloodlines Finally, we have the archetypal Death faction, the Soulblight Gravelords. This box contains the most miniatures of the lot, most of them skeletons and wolves. As far as I am aware, these are all newish models too, from the last couple of years. In terms of savings, we’re talking on the lower side here with 30% all around. Still, it’s a lot of miniatures to start a decent force with, 990 points worth. Soulblight Gravelords – Vengorian Court Contents Saving one of the best till last here in the Necromancer. Armed with his trusty staff, Deadwalker wound sponge in Undead Minions and Vanhel’s Danse Macabre you’ve got yourself a model which will appear in a lot of lists. Vanhel’s Danse Macabre being cast on a 6 means it won’t always go off but you’ll be casting it nearly every turn and it lasts until your next hero phase so you can use it with the Skeletons mentioned later to try and pre-empt the enemy coming in and regen more than you otherwise might think you’ll be able to. The Maggotkin of Nurgle’s Vanguard box also suggests they’ll follow a similar template to the Combat Patrol kits, providing a robust selection of well-chosen models that can form the pillar of a larger army, and serve as the foundation for a growing collection. There’s no word yet as to whether Vanguard will also be a new playing format in Age of Sigmar, as Combat Patrol is in 40k.

Give the gift of Dakka this Christmas. This box contains a veritable tide of greenskins, with a whopping 20 Boyz, five Nobz, a swarm of Gretchin, a Big Mek, a Deffkilla Wartrike, and an Orky plane that can be built in four different ways. Necrons Battleforce: Worldscour Legion The preview also revealed new Deathrattle Skeletons. Infantry units that are intended to make up the core of a Soulblight army, they can be customised with swords or spears. And joining them on the frontlines are the new Deadwalker Zombies. The squishiest infantry of the Soulblight force, they’re a horde unit, intended to fill up your army’s ranks and overpower enemy units through the sheer weight of their shambling, decaying flesh. A note on most named characters mentioned above, as they can already have a sub-faction and therefore cannot benefit from allegiance abilities of another lineage when taken in a different sub-faction. Monsters in Soulblight Gravelords Army So, it appears that the Lumineth Realm-Lords are really the winners of this, but everything is about equal. None of these lists are really BAD, except I don’t find any value in the Hedonites of Slaanesh. They don’t bring any of their really good-looking units to the table in these battleforces. But the other three all have a few charms. I likely won’t get any of them, but if you’re a collector, the Age of Sigmar Christmas Box is always a bonus. The designated “Monster Faction” if you want to run lots of Zombie Dragons and Terrorgheists. Battle TraitsThe Soulblight Gravelords are where we start to question the choices games workshop have made. While we can see the synergies in the other boxes this one feels off. Skeletons and direwolves are both good horde options (and we might be able to help you paint both the skeletons and wolves). The knights offer some punch and the bats providing some strong harassment. Our main issue is that those units don’t work well with their choice of leader. Vengorian Lords are made to buff monster units, none of which are in the lists. Coming in at 990 points means you have plenty of scope to add in some monsters, but it feels like you’re being pushed to do that rather than given something that works efficiently out the box. Evolution not revolution – Whilst the book isn’t bursting with new ideas, it’s a really solid iteration on the previous tome, and almost everything has been tinkered with. The subfactions provide a way to play the army, so you can choose whichever you prefer, but the army itself is solid and reliable. The previous book despite some initial success, fell in the lower half of the meta ranking, but the new book opens much more healing/resurrecting capabilities that opportunely used can change the balance of the game. Ruled by Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares , the Avengorii dynasty is an assemblage of embittered monstrosities who have abandoned any pretence of nobility in their pursuit of true strength. By contrast, the wolf-blooded Vyrkros – such as Radukar himself, or newcomer Ivya – keep their animalistic tendencies at bay through sheer force of will, though many still devolve into howling beasts. The battletome’s cover art might also hint towards another, upcoming Soublight centrepiece unit. Look to the left of the central Vampire Lord, and you’ll spy what appears to be an undead dragon. Nothing has been confirmed, but this might be a subtle tease at an updated vampiric dragon mount. Maybe.

The Era of the Beast has created new challenges for those cursed by the blood kiss, for the outpouring of predatory Ghurish energy has only aggravated the rapacious nature of the vampires. Many have given themselves fully over to the bloodlust, satiating their basest desires in orgies of blood and battle. RagnarokAngel: A lot of the response seems negative but I think they’re overblown. The book is…it’s fine? I don’t hate it, and I was a huge fan of Legions of Nagash and just wanted this book brought into the new edition. I agree with a lot of the criticisms I’m hearing that it’s not creative enough, as many of the abilities are just rehashed from Legions of Nagash but that’s kind of what I wanted. I think some positive changes were made in terms of rearranging the subfactions, how summoning works and updating the spells. There are so many heroes to choose from, that you may feel overwhelmed, but it’s important to remember almost all named characters are forced into a specific sub-faction, outside of which they are not as effective. So, once you choose a lineage, your options will be drastically reduced, although most of them are Vyrkos anyway. The Lore of the Deathmages can be used by the Mortarchs, Necromancer and Torgillius with great options like Waste Away that reduces by 1 the enemy wound roll and damage characteristic or Prison of Grief that assigns the strike-last effect.

Gravesites

The jury is out on the value of these as we haven’t seen the prices yet, but anything in the ballpark of last year makes these sets a steal.

The Zombies are a great anvil unit. Not only there’s multiple way to add models to a unit, especially in Vyrkos themed lists, but they can also explode in the combat phase against elite units trying to take them over an objective. A unit of them can start with 60 models, hence 60 wounds at a cost lower than some leaders like Neferata or Manndred and they can almost do as much damage as Nagash that costs 3 times more. The remaining stuff is quite positive. The Bladelords are good, bodyguards for your more delicate or important Heroes like Teclis or the Scinari Cathaller are extremely important if you have the space. The wardens are your bread and butter and youll be buying a fair number of them anyway so good start to include them here. Not all vampires are direct descendants from the two Mortarchs. Legend says that Belladamma Volga bargained with the undead godbeast Hrunspuul receiving from him her powers (and curse) reflecting the most sacred of the animal-spirits she venerated: the wolf. It is so that the Vyrkos Dynasty was born and why they hold so dear the wolf as their symbol. You love halloween? You still clutch your 5th edition Vampire Counts army book to your chest? Soulblight have a cool, old school warhammer aesthetic with a brilliant model line that has (almost) totally been revamped. The depth of the line gives you options to monster mash, to take hugely powerful heroes, devastating heavy cavalry and shambling hordes – but it’s also totally viable to take a mix. Top 5 Things About the BattletomeGrave Guard are a big winner for a returning unit, with some shuffling of profile bonuses and tidying up of warscroll rules effectively resulting in two flavours of GG: Punch very hard, or punch slightly less hard but be very tough for their cost. The double damage on 6s to wound has changed over to a flat MW in addition, and the Great Wight Blades now deal flat 2 damage. This is a classic example of a great warscroll in a vacuum, but also one that scales very well with buffs. Despite not receiving a model update with this tome, I fully expect we will see a lot of Grave Guard in the future, as they’ve managed to stay at the same price point but get even tougher and punchier in the process. So let’s take a look at the individual forces and the Value in each box. 2021 Battleforce – Soulblight Gravelords – Revenant Legion (Contents, Price, Value & Savings) Hedonites of Slaanesh– 30 minis, including a Shardspeaker, three Slaangor Fiendbloods, ten Blissbarb archers, one homunculus, five Exalted Seekers, and ten elite warriors buildable as Mymirdesh Painbringers or Symbraesh Twinsouls.
