While messages are perfectly readable on the crisp AMOLED screen, they have a tendency to bunch up. If you’re out and about and receive a WhatsApp message, you may just glance at it on your wrist and continue with your day. But if you receive a second one from a different conversation, the watch will show the first until you’ve actively dismissed it. There’s also, at the time of writing, a bug that means your watch will keep buzzing with the phone call notification even after you answer your phone. You can dismiss this but it’ll start buzzing again after you hang up, weirdly. Huami (a sub-brand of Xiaomi, and the name behind the Amazfit line) has confirmed that the watch will last for a single day on a full charge - it's a 420mAh cell - but we hope that estimate is on the conservative side, and that you won't have to charge the smartwatch up every night. The Amazfit Verge runs a proprietary OS, despite its capable hardware – dual core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB storage (1.9GB user available). Interacting with the Verge is a tale of swipes and taps, and the story is illustrated with some fun graphics that visualize the weather and other UI elements. A handful of watch faces can also be accessed with a long press of the main screen, there’s a simple to navigate settings menu and when paired with an Android smartphone using Bluetooth, it can even act as a phone call receiver/speaker combo too. The operating system is also different, which is a bit weird for two smartwatch siblings. Amazfit says that the Verge uses the Amazfit OS, which is “based on Android system”. Presumably this means Wear OS but, alas, I can’t confirm that. The Verge Lite, meanwhile, uses the same OS found on the Bip, which would go a long way to explaining how it delivers such impressive battery life.At the moment the Amazfit Verge 2 is only confirmed for Chinese markets; we've yet to learn a worldwide release date, although there's no guarantee the device will come to the UK, US or Australia. Although it’s not a bad look as such, the design feels a bit more childlike than something you’d get from Samsung or Garmin. This isn’t helped by the rubbery wristband they come with, although you can snap these off via the release pins and replace with something more to your taste. Beware, though, a different strap might look a bit odd due to the way the bezel moulds into the top of the bands. Jian, Yu (August 30, 2021). There’s a built-in microphone and a loudspeaker so you can use the watch to accept incoming calls on your phone. There’s also the Xiao digital assistant, which can answer your questions. Amazfit says that, while the Amazfit Verge will last five days with typical usage, the Verge Lite can manage a far more impressive 20 days. The screen is a 1.3-inch 360x360 AMOLED panel. Plenty sharp and plenty colourful, it pops nicely with the default watch face elegantly mirroring the red accents of the watch body. As with the Amazfit Bip before them, the Verge and Verge Lite are pretty compelling but their higher prices mean they’re a touch harder to recommend, especially given the strength of competition these days.That applies to the standard Verge especially. Now that the Garmin Vivoactive 3 can be had for a similar price, the chunky plastic style of Amazfit’s offering is a bit of a turn-off. The screen is a circular 1.3-inch 360x360 AMOLED panel, slightly recessed within an IP68 water and dust resistant casing. The watch’s two-tone finish looks fun, pairing dark and light grey off against one another in the version we reviewed, with the rubber strap taking on the darker tone, keeping things classy.
